Mother’s appeal fails as son is remanded in custody
A mother’s appeal to have her son granted bail cut no ice with Judge Gerard Haughton at Gorey District Court on June 1.
The court dealt with a bail application from Bernard Egan (28) of 27 Forest Park in Courtown.
He was arrested, explained Garda Gavin Tracy, after a search of his home uncovered property taken in a burglary and from a motor vehicle.
The garda pointed out that Egan had a record of 20 bench warrants issued when he failed to show up for various court dates.
Defending solicitor Lana Doherty said that her client was on anti-depressants and that he was attending Cornmarket Project counselling.
He was prepared to sign on regularly at the garda barracks if granted his liberty and obey a curfew, while €200 cash was available by way of surety.
Ms Doherty continued that the defendant was expecting the birth of his first child and that he was looking for a job.
‘He will turn up,’ said the accused man’s mother Jacintha Egan. ‘I trust him.’
However, the judge was satis- fied that Egan had been caught red-handed.
The defendant was already on bail in a burglary case, yet he did not appear to know what the conditions of bail were.
Bail was refused and the defendant remanded in custody until June 15.
