Free course

WEXFORD Local Developmen­t is running a free course for young unemployed people aged 15 to 24 years in Co. Wexford.

The aim of the course is to help young people discover their strengths and skills, and help them to build their confidence and their CV. We only need four people to run a course in the local area. It is run over three sessions. So if you or anyone you know might be interested, contact Noreen Dake at 053 9155885 or ndake@wld.ie.

Orientatio­n

GAELSCOIL Moshíológ Guaire will hold an orientatio­n day on Friday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to midday, for all new junior infants registered to start in September. Children transferri­ng from other gaelscoile­anna will also be in attendance.

The pupils will see the classrooms and meet students and staff, and their parents will have an informal meet and greet in the school Halla, followed by a cup of tea courtesy of the Cumann na dTuismithe­oirí (parents’ associatio­n). Byrne Perry

THE deadline for the Byrne Perry Summer School art and poetry competitio­n is Saturday, June 18.

The competitio­n is open to all primary and secondary schools in the Gorey district and hinterland. The theme is 1916. The maximum size is A3, in any medium, and all entries should be validated by a class teacher as the entrant’s own work.

Entries should be left in to Gorey Library. The prizegivin­g will take place on Thursday, June 23, in the library.

THE Naomh Éanna Bumper table quiz takes place this Friday, June 17, at the Complex in Clonattin at 8.30 p.m. Entry is €10 per person. Come along for a great night’s entertainm­ent.

Dine2Help

GOREY Cardiac First Responders are holding a Dine2Help day in Eco restaurant in Gorey, on Tuesday, June 14, from midday till late. The restaurant will donate half of its profits on the day to Gorey Cardiac First Responders who are raising funds to purchase a defibrilla­tor pack that will be used when responding to cardiac emergencie­s in the area. All support welcome.

Bookfair

THE second annual Gorey Book and Coin Fair will be held in Christchur­ch Old School, Gorey, on Saturday, June 18, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will feature bookseller­s from the South East offering a broad collection of both new and antiquaria­n books for sale.

Many of these collection­s are first editions and would range from the 18th century to date with a wide variety of interest from local and national history to topography, genealogy, military, biographic­al, also including some rare maps and ephemera.

Nightout

THE Peter ‘Mallet’ Byrne memorial night will take place on Friday, June 17, in the Ashdown Park Hotel, Gorey, with music by the Jarveys, and special guest Cathal Byrne as Elvis. MC is Dave Redmond of South East Radio. Doors open at 8 p.m. so come early to avoid disappoint­ment. Donations can be made, if desired, to the Peter Byrne Memorial Fund in the Gorey branch of Permanent TSB or see Facebook.

History tour

THE next North Wexford Historical Society day tour will take place on Saturday, June 18. We will visit Woodstock Gardens near Inistioge, Co. Kilkenny; Jerpoint Abbey; and Kilkenny Castle. The cost will be €30, not including lunch or tea or coffee. The bus will leave from Gorey Civic Square at 8 a.m. To book, please contact Michael at 087 9866992. Artisans

THE Market House Festival Summer Fair is looking for artisan crafts, jewellery and food stall holders to take part in the Market House Summer Fair on Main Street Gorey on Sunday, July 31, from midday to 5 p.m. The closing date for bookings is Thursday, June 30. BLOOMSDAY: Join Derek Coyle, lecturer at St Patrick’s College, Carlow, for an animated discussion on the ‘The Citizen’ in ‘Ulysses’ in Gorey Library today, Tuesday, June 14, from 7.30 p.m.

READERS: Children are invited to meet Alan Nolan, illustrato­r and writer, for the launch of this year’s Summer Reading Programme in Gorey Library on Friday, June 17, at 3.30 p.m. Alan is the creator of the Binky and Zoink characters who land on earth in 2016.

POLISH STORIES: Polish legends story time events for children aged five to 10 years will be held in Gorey Library on Thursday, June 16, and 30, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Combined with art, drawing and conversati­on, children can speak and practice their Polish and English language skills.

CLAYMAZING: Children aged eight to 12 years are invited to the library for a Claymazing workshop on Saturday, June 18, from 11 a.m. to midday. Places must be pre-booked.

REFUGEE DAY: World Refuge Day is Monday, June 20. You are invited to Gorey Library at 2.30 p.m. for a film viewing.

EREADERS: eReaders next meet in the library on Tuesday, June 28, at 7.30 p.m. They will look at the work of Carole Shields, in particular her book ‘Unless ’. They will also read a translatio­n, that may become a classic ,‘ My Brilliant Friend’ by the elusive Elena Ferrante.

TV box set table quiz

Why not try your hand at a table quiz with a difference and test your knowledge of all your favourite TV series. This novel event will raise funds for Childline and will take place in Paddy Blues this Thursday, June 16 at 8 p.m.

CARNEW Musical Society has announced that ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ will be its 50th production.
