A COURTOWN MAN who emigrated to New York died in America recently.
Thomas Donegan who was born in Courtown Harbour lived in Irvington, New York and died peacefully on July 15 at the age of 87 years.
He died at Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry surrounded by his loving family.
Thomas was born in September 5, 1928 and was the son of William and Mary Donegan.
Over the course of his long and productive life Thomas worked in Courtown Harbour as a fisherman and a brickmaker before moving to America in 1958.
There he worked as a longshoreman on the Manhattan Piers and as a refrigeration mechanic in Port Newark, New Jersey.
He was a loyal member of the Local 791 of the International Longshoreman Association and made many great friends through the association.
Thomas was married to Margaret Rose Donegan for 59 years and the couple reared three children, Brendan, Catherine Paula and Mary Theresa.
He is survived by his beloved wife Margaret Rose, son Brendan (New York), daughters Catherine Paula (Dobbs Ferry) and Mary Theresa (Irvington), grandchildren, Kevin and Caitlin, siblings John, Liam, Patrick, Molly, Lilly, and a wide circle of family and friends. He is predeceased by his siblings Nancy and Peter.
A memorial Mass was held for the repose of Thomas’s soul in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Riverchapel on July 18.
