Unique tapestry to be unveiled on Friday

A SPECTACULA­R TAPESTRY made by local women will be unveiled at the Gap Arts Festival The tapestry which shows Annagh, Croughan and the Bann River was funded by Wexford Arts Department under the Artist in the Community scheme.

Since September 2015 a number of local woman have been taking classes with the Boolavogue Tapestry Group to hone their skills to complete the tapestry.

Scenes reflected in the tapestry include the church in Hollyfort, the Gap Pub, Cullen’s shop in Ballyfad, a cornfield, the community field and Limbrick Castle in ruins.

Benny along with Geraldine O’Connor, Alejandra Ní Shúilleabh­áin, Maureen Cullen, Leann McCarten, Helen Noctor, Marie Hall, Mandy Penney and Carmel Coates started weaving the tapestry in January.

Also included is the village pump, the forge at Hollyfort and a depiction of the Annagh Urn from 2000 BC.

Every day since January different groups of the women have woven the stories of where they live into a unique piece of work.

The Community Tapestry will be officially unveiled at the opening of the Gap Arts Festival on Friday, August 5, at the Gap Theatre in Ballythoma­s School at 8 p.m. It will be shown again at the Gap Theatre on Saturday at 8 p.m. and will be on display in Kilanerin Hall on Sunday from midday.
