DUNNE SLAMS RTE

Annoyance voiced at radio statement

- BRENDAN FURLONG Sports reporter

LIAM DUNNE has lashed out a report suggesting that he would stay on as Senior hurling manager should the players want him.

Dunne has hit back at an RTE statement that should the players support him continuing as manager, he would do so.

‘RTE got that information all wrong. It didn’t come from myself,’ Dunne said.

As speculation mounts as to the Wexford managerial post, Dunne sent a text message on Sunday as follows:

‘Hi men, I just wanted to let you all know that I never said to anybody that I would stay on over Wexford if the players wanted me to.

‘That is not a player decision and I would never think that way or expect it to happen, as a former player myself over 16 years with Wexford.

‘What I said was I would be willing to stay next year if I was wanted and, if not, I would help out with the Oulart U-10 next year (Jack Dunne team).

‘RTE got that information all wrong. It didn’t come from myself.’

Now Dunne is to hold a meeting with his players this Thursday evening in the Glenview Hotel to review their season, but it’s not yet known if the post of manager will be discussed at this gathering.

Wexford G.A.A. has yet to make any decision relating to the post despite the fact Dunne’s contract with the county expired following their All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Waterford.

On completion of four years in charge, Dunne was granted a further one-year extension, but not without controversy as he failed to gather any support at the County Board meeting from club delegates who sat in silence when his name was put to the floor by the County Chairman, Diarmuid Devereux.

Dunne was eventually proposed by the county’s Central Council delegate, Tony Dempsey, and appointed without any apparent support from the clubs.

A lot of water will travel under the bridge before a manager is in place.

While many names are out there in the public domain, Wexford G.A.A. officers have yet to meet to decide on a potential successor to Dunne who took over role in November, 2011.
