Hynes claims Senior double
Two titles for the master
TOMMY HYNES made it two Senior titles from two last week as he was joined by Paul Carty as the St. Mary’s duo captured the doubles title with a strong win over St. Joseph’s pair Paul Lambert and Gavin Buggy.
The St. Mary’s men were very impressive throughout the game and pushed the pace from the outset with a strong 21-14 win in the opening set.
They followed it up with a blistering 21-10 win in the second set to capture the title, with Hynes adding the doubles crown to the singles title he collected a week earlier when he defeated Galen Riordan from Ballyhogue.
David Kenny from Castlebridge won a fantastic Intermediate singles crown when he got the better of Darren O’Toole from Coolgreany in what can only be described a war of attrition. The hard-hitting O’Toole pounded the ball around the court in the opening set and won 21-19.
He looked odds-on for a twoset win in the second but Kenny showed fitness and agility to get to a lot of ball and he began to kill it to good effect, closing out game 21-18.
The third set was another dogfight with both players not giving an inch before Kenny eventually hit more winners and ran out a 21-19 victor.
Daniel Kavanagh added a Minor singles title to his medal haul with a comfortable win for the St. Joseph’s man in the final as he got the better of Liam Rossiter from Ballyhogue on a 21-4, 21-11 scoreline.
However, Rossiter would not leave the week empty-handed as he collected the Junior ‘B’ doubles crown when he combined with Anthony Butler for an impressive 21-4, 21-12 win over John Roche and Stephen Murphy from Cas- tlebridge.
St. Martin’s were the winners of the Junior ‘C’ doubles as David Stanners and Paddy Curran got together for a three-set win over Brian Busher and Eamonn Codd from Bridgetown. They came from a set down after losing the opening set 21-15, before recovering in the next two sets to win 21-17, 21-14.
Another victory for St. Martin’s was secured by David’s brother, James, as he was crowned champion in the Over-35 singles with a comfortable 21-8, 21-11 win over Fintan Furlong from St. Mary’s.
Meanwhile, in the Masters singles, county Chairman Ricky Barron presided over a win for himself as the Barntown man got the better of Phil Coleman from Ballymitty 17-21, 21-16, 21-19.
Seán Nolan and Tommy Armstrong from Kilmyshall celebrated success in the Masters ‘B’ doubles as they powered to a 21-8, 21-4 win over David Cleary and Martin Kinsella from Ballymitty.
Tony Breen dominated the final of the Diamond Masters ‘A’ singles with a powerful 21-3, 21-11 win over Jim Doyle from Barntown.
Brendan Murphy collected the honours in the Diamond Masters ‘B’ singles as he won an all-Castlebridge affair, getting the better of John Bail on a 19-21, 21-10, 21-6 scoreline.
Lauren Flanagan from Coolgreany rounded off the wins in the championships last week as she was a 21-0, 21-10 victor over Marie Busher from Bridgetown in the ladies’ Junior ‘C’ singles.
