The Graiguenamanagh Society will hold its annual charity golf classic on Saturday, August 6, at Borris Golf Club. The entry fee is £100 for a team of four, any combination. Non-G.U.I. members are welcome.

Full club handicaps apply. For more details contact Billy Hoare, Hon. Secretary (087-6196291), or Jim Kielthy (087-9644851).

NEW ROSS SENIORS

We had a lovely outing at Dungarvan Golf Club on Monday, July 25, playing on a course which was in pristine condition. Taking part in their Seniors open competition as well as having our four-person team event with the best three cards counting, we had the best of both worlds.

Plaudits go to Dungarvan for their forward tee positions which made the game more enjoyable for all concerned. It’s a pity more clubs wouldn’t follow their example and take Senior players into consideration when marking out the course for Senior events.

As usual with our group we had a grandstand finish with only one point separating the winners and the runners-up. John Joe Cullen (39), Larry Shannon (37) and Pat Traynor (36), and with their fourth player’s total (Billy Redmond) not required this time, took the honours with 112 points.

Second on 111 points were Tony Sexton (41), John F. Roche (39) and Patsy Farrell (31), their fourth non-scoring colleague being Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan. On 108 points and in third position were John Browne (38), Tom Kent (38) and Eamon Delaney (32), their super-sub being Michael Brennan.

Finishing fourth on 101 points were John Joe Murray (35), Liam Glasheen (35) and Tony Harford (31), and first sub. here was the Campile historian, Thomas Grennan. Andy Ronan (35), Jamesie Murphy (35) and Willie Naddy (31) were fifth also with 101 points, with Eddie Keher the odd one out.

Many thanks go to Irene and the staff at Dungarvan for their warm welcome and for making our outing a very pleasant one indeed.

The Autumn Senior Alliance outing is on Monday, August 8, and the venue is Clonmel Golf Club. Names A.S.A.P. to Jamesie Murphy on 085-1846172.

Just a reminder to all who intend travelling to Faithlegg on August 16 that we will take the names and entry fee €20 this coming Thursday, August 4. On the draw board for August are John Murphy, Willie Naddy and Denis Kirwan.

This month’s sponsor of the gents’ monthly Seniors on August 11 is our very own Stephen Fitzpatrick, our club professional, purveyor of the leading brands in golf equipment and apparel for all ages, sizes and abilities.

Lessons and tuition can be booked with Stephen himself; you are never too old to learn and get rid of those bad habits. Ask Tommy Cooper!

How is your golfing knowledge? We will be running a golfing quiz on Friday, August 5, at 8 p.m.

All questions will be on golf. It will be a fun trivia quiz and not too hard.

The questions will not be the likes of who won what from 40 years ago and rules/regulations interpretation and the likes.

They will be much more general and quirkier than that. It would be great if our members could get teams of four from other clubs to come along as well to add to the spice.
