Jennifer thanks Hugh

-

A SUNNY DAY at the beach ended in despair for Jennifer Lynch Pitt when her jewellery was lost in the sand. But thanks to the kindness of strangers, she was reunited with her cherished belongings.

The Harpurstown resident spent a scorching day at Baginbun Bay with her family when she lost her necklace and bracelet but it was not until she returned home that she realised they were gone. On failing to locate it herself on a return trip, Jennifer decided to spread the word.

‘I decided to put it up on Facebook because I thought, what do I have to lose? People started to share it and one man named Huge Burke from Duncannon got in touch with me and offered to help me with his metal detector,’ explained Jennifer.

‘My family and I went along the following day to meet Hugh and his son and we walked the beach looking for it. We were about to give up, when I came to the rock and found the necklace hanging off of it.’

Although Jennifer didn’t manage to locate her bracelet, she said she was over the moon to be met with such kindness from Hugh.

‘It really restores your faith in humanity, especially when there is so much doom and gloom out there,’ she said. ‘For somebody to do that and give up their spare time like that is just lovely.’

The experience has encouraged Jennifer to pay it forward and help others in need in the future.

‘I offered to give Hugh something but he wouldn’t take it. As he has worked with Waterford Marinewatch, he asked me to donate to them next time I see a bucket,’ she said.

In the meantime, Hugh promised her that he will continue to look for her bracelet in the sand.

‘ The bracelet was actually very sentimental as had it since I was a teenager. It was my lucky bracelet with angel charms on it,’ she said. ‘Hugh promised he’d keep looking for it. Such a thoughtful man!’
