OPENING OF 1916 GARDEN
A very large group of the community gathered at Riverside, Clonegal, on Saturday, July 23, at midday for the official opening of the 1916 Commemoration Garden.
PJ Kavanagh was MC for the proceedings. The Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, councillor John Murphy began the ceremony with the raising of the Irish Flag. The guest of honour, Seamus Rafter, nephew of the Enniscorthy 1916 hero Seamus Rafter was invited to unveil the 1916 Proclamation. A lament was then played on the pipes.
Seamus Rafter went to the podium and gave a very interesting talk about his uncle. Amhran na Bhfiann was then played by the piper and a minutes silence was observed in respect of all who gave their lives in 1916 for Irish freedom. John McCabe then stepped forward to read the 1916 Proclamation.
Following the reading of the Proclamation, the young multi-talented Sheppard family entertained the gathering with their songs and music. Everyone was amazed with their ability at such young ages and very much enjoyed their renderings.
Local historian Dan Murphy addressed the gathering with a very interesting account of the history of Clonegal, the river Derry and Clonegal Bridge dating back to the 12th Century, which was full of interesting and amusing anecdotes. The singing of the song ‘Grace’ by Joe Whelan concluded the proceedings. All were invited to Johnny Dunne’s for refreshments.
