Monaseed honours local role in 1916

DOYLE FAMILY MEMBERS FROM MONASEED TOOK PART IN THE 1916 RISING

- By FINTAN LAMBE

TWO 1916 memorials are to be unveiled in Monaseed next week.

The small but dedicated Monaseed 1916 Commemoration Committee is putting together a special ceremony beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, to unveil a commemorative stone and a commemorative Celtic cross to remember the contributions to the Rising of members of the Doyle family who grew up in the local area.

Seamus Rath, who is a member of the organising committee, said that the ceremony will begin at Buckstown, where a commemorative stone will be unveiled near to where the Doyle family home once stood on the Buckstown Road.

The participants will then march from the 1798 monument to the Myles Byrne Memorial Hall in Monaseed, where a new 1916 commemorative Celtic cross will be unveiled.

Brothers Seamus, Patsy, Tom, Denis, and William, and two of their sisters Ciss and Annie Doyle all contributed to the Rising in various ways.

Seamus Doyle (pictured) was one of the Rising leaders in Enniscorthy, and read the Proclamation.

He travelled with Sean Etchingham to Arbor Hill Prison, under British escort, to hear direct confirmation of the surrender from Padraig Pearse himself.

He spoke many times about a 1798 Rebellion leader Myles Byrne, who also hailed from the locality. A Celtic cross stands over Byrne’s grave in Paris, so the erection of a new Celtic cross in the village was deemed appropriate. Tom Doyle was known as ‘ The Rifleman’, while Patsy helped organise movements as he had a motorbike. Annie and Ciss were involved in the women’s movement. Members of the Doyle family have been invited to the ceremony. Main speaker on the day will be Fr Seamus de Val. Members of Irish United Nations Veterans Association, as well as the Enniscorthy Pike Group and Re-enactment Group will also take part. The Proclamation will be read in Buckstown by Colm Rath, and it will be read again at the Myles Byrne Memorial Hall. All are welcome along to what promises to be a special day.
