21 per cent boost in car sales in county

THERE has been a 21 per cent increase in car sales in County Wexford up until July this year when compared with the same period last year.

County Wexford had the second highest percentage increase of cars sold in the region at 21.4 per cent, behind County Waterford, where dealeships saw a 27.8 per cent increase in car sales. 3,183 cars were sold in the Model County up until July compared to 2,622 in the same period of 2015. 3,379 vehilces were sold in County Wexford up until July this year.

The most popular cars sold this year are the Hyundai Tucson, Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Octavia.

Figures released on Tuesday by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that the official 162 car sales figures for the month of July are significan­tly up across the country. The month of July saw 162 registrati­ons increase by 8 per cent.

The Commercial Vehicles sector continues to perform well with Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) up 15 per cent (4,341) on the same month last year (3,760) and currently, year to date, are up 23 per cent (22,746) overall. While Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) registrati­ons, are also up 37 per cent for the month of July (397) 2016 when compared to July last year (290), with registrati­ons up 41 per cent for the year to date.

SIMI Director General Alan Nolan said: ‘It is important for both the industry and the economy that, new vehicle sales continue to be at sustainabl­e levels, which for new cars is in the region of 150,000 to 160,000, based on the current population and the age of the national car fleet.’
