New Senior boss sought
DAVID POWER has stepped down as Wexford Senior football manager.
Power, who has been at the helm of football in the county for the past two years, informed County Chairman, Diarmuid Devereux, of his decision early last week.
Power in a statement said he can no longer devote the time and energy required for the posts of manager of the Senior, Junior and Under-21 football sides.
‘I would like to sincerely thank Wexford G.A.A. Board for giving me the opportunity to manage their Senior team, and also their Junior and Under-21 sides,’ he added.
‘It has been a tremendous honour for me to be involved with the three teams and I enjoyed every minute of the job.
‘I would like to thank the Wexford players for all their hard work and I want to wish them every success on the playing fields and in their future careers.
‘My backroom team put in a tremendous amount of work and showed immense dedication and they were of huge assistance all the way through.
;I would like to acknowledge the help of John Power, Michael Walsh (selectors), Tim McCarthy, Matty Forde (coaches), Alan O’Connor (Peak Fitness and Strength Conditioning), Adrian Walsh (goalkeeping coach), Jim Murphy (team administration), Adrian Shiel (kit manager), Noel Holohan, Louise Fanning, Ross Elmes (video analysis), Louise Mulhare (physio), Darius Fourie (masseur), Dr. Kevin Byrne (team doctor) and Nicola Forest (nutritionist), who all played huge roles.
‘Also I would like to thank Seamus Fitzhenry (Football Advisory Chairman), Joe O’Shaughnessy (Team Liaison Officer), Margaret Doyle (Co. Secretary) and Diarmuid Devereux (Co. Chairman) for all their support.
‘A lot of significant progress has been made in the last two years,’ Power claimed.
‘A lot of young players have been blooded and introduced to inter-county football and we would have been competitive always in all the games we played across the three grades.
‘I wish the players well for the future and thank them for their support over the two years. I would also like to thank my selectors and backroom team for all their support, while I would wish Wexford G.A.A. well into the future with the work undertaken with development squads likely to reap their rewards in the future.’
Diarmuid Devereux paid tribute to Power for his work and contribution to football in the county.
‘David put in a huge effort managing the three teams this year while he won the Leinster Junior title for a second year in a row. I would like to thank him and wish him well into the future.’
Wexford have now begun their search for a new manager with no names being mentioned at the moment.
Having failed to secure promotion back from Division 4 and not winning even one championship game this year, the new manager faces a daunting task in trying to bring the county back to a higher grade of football after an uninspiring two years.
