Glorious weather for the parks doubles deciders
THE MAXOL Wexford parks tennis doubles finals took place on Thursday afternoon in glorious weather at Hillbrook Tennis Club, Enniscorthy.
The weather for the month was beautiful, so it was great to play the finals in such great conditions. Hillbrook was looking its very best , and all the matches were played in a lovely relaxed atmosphere, with just the boys under 14 developing a bit of edge, but very good-spirited contests were witnessed throughout.
Next year parks will be running more open competitions on Thursday afternoons in various venues in the county, to help the children to enjoy playing matches both singles and doubles.
There were a couple of great long rallies here in Hillbrook with just the right level of tension and fun! When you lose a long rally, sometimes it gives you the drive to go on and win the match!
This year in parks there were over 900 children playing tennis at the twelve venues in Co. Wexford, some for a week and many for the four weeks, at the price of €30.
For any of three children who enjoyed the parks there are still camps available in August in Hillbrook (see Wynne Tennis Acad- emy or Hillbrook Tennis Club). There is also a camp in Gorey Tennis Club.
Many of the players who played in the finals will be playing in the Boat and Tennis Club open entry competition for beginners. Congratulations to all the players - the more you practice the better you become.
Under-10 boys’ doubles: Tadhg Lawton and Kilian Sinnott (Kilmore) beat Jayden Kehoe and Oisín Kelly (Bridgetown).
Under-12 boys’ doubles: Jack McNamara and Conor Mackey (Glynn-Barntown) beat Owen Cheevers and Louis Cosgrave (Bridgetown).
Under-14 boys’ doubles: David Codd and Rory Walsh (Piercestown) beat Rory Byrne and Jack O’Brien (Bunclody).
Under-16 boys’ doubles: Adam Feery and John Hennessy (Piercestown) beat Tommy Atkinson and Reagan Tracey (Bunclody).
Under-10 girls’ doubles: Milly Sutton and Eimear Porter (New Ross) beat Jalena McNamara and Rachel Cullen (Glynn-Barntown).
Under-12 girls’ doubles: Emma O’Gorman and Aoife Flanagan (New Ross) beat Patricia Walsh and Kate Power (Bridgetown).
Under-14 girls’ doubles: Emily Crowdle and Eve Byrne (New Ross).
Under-16 girls’ doubles: Megan Dempsey and Shona (W.H.B.T.C).
The singles matches took place on Friday at the Boat and Tennis Club and at St. Martin’s.
Under-10 girls: Grace O’Connor (Piercestown) beat Molly Kearney (W.H.B.T.C.).
Under-12 girls: Abbie Walsh (Bunclody) beat Jodie Keeling (Glynn-Barntown).
Under-14 girls: Claire Doyle (New Ross) beat Aoife O’Connor (W.H.B.T.C.).
Under-10 boys: Darragh O’Brien (Cleariestown) beat Martin Sinnott (New Ross).
Under-12 boys: Ben Larkin (Piercestown) beat Tadhg Barron (Bunclody).
Under-14 boys: Kevin Culleton (Piercestown) beat Noah Culleton (Kilmore).
Under-16 boys: Rory O’Brien (Cleariestown) beat Adam Feery (Piercestown).
The venue with the most wins is awarded the Liam Kennedy Cup, and with Bridgetown Kilmore holding it for the last three years, there was a close contest between New Ross, which uses St. Mary’s Secondary School, and Piercestown. Piercestown won by five wins to four in a good contest.
