NEW ROSS SENIORS

It is hard to believe that 20 years have passed by since Kevin Treacy, Luke Power, John Delaney and a few others got the idea of having a competition for Senior golfers every Thursday.

From a small beginning with only three or four teams playing, the venture has blossomed and now we have 60 to 70 veterans in action every week. Everyone looks forward to their game on Thursday even though of late other interests seem to be upsetting our schedule.

Twelve teams went into action last week in almost perfect golfing weather where high scores were expected. Combining perfectly, there was one team which created a scoring record, bringing a hitherto unachieved total of one hundred points.

Patsy Farrell (15), Willie Whitty (18), Larry Shannon (21) and Tony Wallace (21) laid the foundations for ultimate victory by clocking up 54 points on the outward nine, and when they added another 46 points on the inward nine they were well and truly declared decisive winners.

Any other outing and the excellent 90 points garnered by Tony Harford (12), Willie Byrne (13), Peter Goggin (16) and Dan Quigley (20) would have been good enough to take first prize.

Third spot went to John Hosey (14), Steve Travis (17), Paul Laffan (20) and Jamesie Murphy (23) with 87 points.

All players are reminded that the draw is at 10.40 a.m. sharp each week and no latecomers will be accommodated as they should be in house by 10.30 p.m.

Out on the course all are reminded to repair pitch marks on the greens, rake the bunkers, and replace divots in order to keep the course in pristine condition.

The teams and tee-times for our outing to Faithlegg G.C. on Tuesday, August 16, are as follows: 10.40 a.m., Tony Harford, Aidan O’Connor, John F. Roche, Tony Wallace; 10.48 a.m., John Murphy, Michael Lee, John Joe Murray, Jamesie Murphy; 10.56 a.m., Patsy Farrell, Frank Boyle, Larry Shannon, Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan; 11.04 a.m., Mick McCarthy, John Joe Cullen, Michael Long, Tommy Grennan; 11.12 a.m., John Shalloe, Paddy Bennett, Donie Cody, Tony Sexton; 11.20 a.m., John Kennedy, Bob Dwyer, Jim Kehoe, Tom Kent; 11.28 a.m., John Browne, Willie Naddy, Billy Redmond.

The numbers for our overnight outing to Ballykisteen in September when New Ross is closed are filling up nicely for what should be a very enjoyable way to celebrate the Seniors’ 20th anniversary.

NEW ROSS

Congratulations to Noel Kehoe (15) who won Owen Conway’s President’s prize last weekend with a fine total of 77 points for the two rounds, and in the process completed a remarkable double.

Noel won the Captain’s prize back in 1994 when playing right-handed. After coming back from injury, Noel had to switch to a ciotóg to continue playing - there can’t be too many golfers out there who have won a major playing right- and left-handed, so well done Noel!

Brian Conway (13), son of President Owen, finished in the runners-up spot with a brilliant total of 80 points but was not eligible to win first prize.

Andy Lawlor (13), leader after the first day, didn’t quite do enough to see off the chasing pack, but his 77 points was good enough for third place, one ahead of fourth-placed Cormac Farrell (13).

Michael Ryan Jnr. won the gross with a very impressive 73 points, and the categories went to Michael Kelleher (6, 73 points), Seán Furlong (11, 75 points), John Aylward (16, 73 points) and Paddy Bennett (20, 74 points).

Kevin Treacy (18) won the veteran’s prize and John Murphy the past President’s, with the 18s going to Jimmy Furlong (12, 41 points) and Hugh Byrne (14, 37 points).

Congratulations to Owen Conway on a very successful and enjoyable edition of the President’s prize. Congratulations also to J.J. Hoyne who was announced as next year’s President!

Last week’s Tuesday fourball was won with a brilliant total of 39 points by Murth Hogan and Seán Furlong.

The category prizes went to Junior Cashin and Robert O’Dwyer on 38 points, and Bill Hurley and Harry Reinhardt on 37 points.

There’s plenty to look forward to in the forthcoming weeks. The lady President’s mixed (Marie O’Connor) takes place on Friday, August 12, with a draw for partners from 3.30 p.m.

The August medal, sponsored by Brooks Jewellers, takes place next Sunday with some Saturday afternoon tee-times also available.

It was a case of hard luck for the All-Ireland fourball team which lost its Leinster semi final against Greystones last weekend in some very tough conditions. New Ross had two matches at home, which were shared. Three matches took place in Greystones, where New Ross managed one victory and just came up short in the decider which went all the way to the 18th.

Congratulations to the team on a wonderful run to the last four in Leinster - no mean feat!

The last team standing is the Brennan Cup which faces a difficult semi-final away to Wicklow next Saturday. Best of luck to all involved.
