ROSSLARE LADIES
Open week for the men was on last week, however on Friday, August 5, there was an open foursomes competition for ladies and gents.
This was a very social and busy day for the club with 260 people playing, of which 116 were ladies. It was sponsored by Lexus in Blackrock, Dublin, and they had a fabulous display of cars on show which added to the glitz. In the evening there was music played by the talented Cian McGovern.
Results: 1, Susan Evans (14) and Florence Garrigan (26), 66.2; 2, Sheila Crosbie (13) and Molly Cash (19), 68.6; 3, Jean Holland (Cork, 17) and Doris Murphy (Mahon, 24), 69.2; 4, Mary O’Shaughnessy (15) and Kit Codd (15), 70.
While the men were busy on the course the ladies decided to get going and do their own thing. Patrick and his bus were waiting for us in the club at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, and then on to Wexford to collect the remainder of the ladies.
A total of 29 of us then headed off to the Glen of the Downs Golf Club. It was gale-force winds that day but nothing deterred us on our outing. We were blown around the mountain with gorgeous views of the Sugar Loaf Mountains and the Irish Sea.
Then it was into the friendly clubhouse for food, drinks and prizes. The spirit of the outing was depicted by Bernie Wright, who in her 80s won a prize and is always game for anything.
Results: 1, Paula Stafford; 2, Mary Frances Codd; 3, Deirdre Delaney; 4, Bernie Wright; front six, Pauline Breen; middle six, Bernadette Cuddihy; back six, Catherine Howard, and two club prizes for Ruth Deeny and Bernadette Cuddihy.
Then it was back home on the bus with Pat, clubs and all our trollies exhausted but delighted, as we had been on a club outing.
On the same day Mary O’Shaughnessy, Bernie Riordan and Siobhán Redmond headed to Carlow to play in the Valerie Doyle competition. They met ladies from all over Leinster and had a lovely day out too.
The ladies’ committee are sponsoring a team for the Pro-Am tournament on September 10. The places on the team will be awarded to the three ladies with the most points from the singles competitions on July 19 and August 9, 16 and 23. Points will be awarded in the same way as G.O.Y. points, and the winning trio will play as a team.
Tuesday, August 16, is another major, the President’s prize to the ladies, singles strokes, G.O.Y. and medal. Our President is Jim Hennessy and we look forward to the day.
