Jubilee 1960 hurling team are honoured

August 1985

-

The great Wexford hurling team that scored a sensational victory in the 1960 All-Ireland over a Tipperary side that most followers of the game had thought to be invincible were the recipients of this year’s Irish Nationwide Building Society GAA Jubilee Awards at a special presentation function held in the Talbot Hotel, Wexford, on Tuesday night.

The awards were presented by Mr Michael Fingleton, Managing Director of the Irish Nationwide Building Society, and Dr Michael Loftus, President, Cumann Luthchleas Gael.

The Jubilee Awards were introduced in 1981 to confer commemorative distinction on the All-Ireland senior champions of twenty-five years past. The first team to be presented with the awards was the Wexford team of 1956, who defeated Cork in the final of that year.

The players who were honoured in last week’s ceremony included eight of that victorious 1956 side.

The function was attended by former GAA President, Mr Paddy Buggy, together with members of the GAA management committee and representatives of the provincial councils. Also among the guests of honour were Mr John Dowling of Offaly, who refereed the dramatic game, and Lieutenant Colonel Tony Wall, who captained the defeated Tipperary team in the final.

The 1960 Wexford All-Ireland champions, players and subs, who were presented with the Irish Nationwide GAA Jubilee Awards were:

Pat Nolan, John Mitchell, Nick O’Donnell, Tom Neville, Jim English, Billy Rackard, John Nolan, Ned Wheeler, Jim Morrissey, Jimmy O’Brien, Padge Kehoe, Oliver McGrath, John Harding, Tim Flood, Mick Morrissey, Sean Power, Eddie Kelly, Sean English, Michael Bennett, and the late Garda officer Seamus Quaid, whose award was accepted by his daughter, Mrs Caroline Kehoe.

The team will also be guests of honour the GAA at his year’s All-Ireland hurling final, where they will be presented on the field.
