GAA NEWS

On Saturday, July 30, our intermediate hurlers took on Blackwater in their first championship game of the season. The conditions were ideal for hurling but both sides seemed nervous and we trailed 0-6 to 0-7 after a low scoring first half. The second half opening score was a brilliant long range point from Tommy Breen but we conceeded a goal soon afterwards and the lads found themeselve four points adrift. A goal from Mark Gahan and a Peter Mernagh point soon had the sides level and the game was in the balance for most of the second half. Great defending near the end and two fine points from Stephen Murphy had us in the lead with a pointed 65 from Pádraig Flynn leaving the our lads 1-12 to 1-10 winners.

Team: Seán Murphy, Mick Sweeney, Chris Daly, Liam Gahan, Graham O’Reilly, Tommy Breen, Dean Fenlon, Niall O’Reilly, Laurence Murphy, Matthew Dunne, Damien Fenlon, Pádraig Flynn, Brian O’Loughlin, Stephen Murphy, Mark Gahan. Subs: Peter Mernagh, Cathal Walsh, Mark Walsh.

The club’s under-10 hurlers were also in action on Saturday the 30th. of July, taking part in the Martin Codd Blitz in Rathnure. They played six hard games in bright sunny conditions and missed out on the shield title by a single point. They were beaten narrowly by Tullagher-Rosbercon in their first game but bounce back to beat Davidstown in the second. The showed great resolve and determination in their game against Oylgate but were unlucky lose. But they bounced back again to beat Askamore and then Ferns to book a place in the Shield Final against Inistioge-The Rower. All the squad played exceptionally well throughout with Oisín Stafford and Robert Cahill starring. ‘Player of the Tournamant’ had to be young Bobby Codd who gave a performance that would have made his grandfather very, very proud.

On Sunday, August 7, the Junior Footballers had an easy win over the Shelmaliers in Oylegate, keeping their qualification hopes alive. Our lad lead by three points at half-time, 0-8 to 1-2.
