PAULINE’S SOCIETY

St. Helen’s Bay was the venue for our most recent outing. A big turn-out on this occasion meant it proved to be a great success with scores in the low forties being returned.

Taking first place with a great score of 42 points was newcomer Colin Fenlon, followed closely behind by Brendan Byrne and Michael O’Neill on 41 points. Brendan took second place on the countback.

Nearest to the pin prizes went to Michael O’Neill and Nicky Sinnott. The visitor’s prize went to Martin Murphy, also on the countback. Well done to all concerned.

Our next outing will take place on Saturday, August 20, in Carrick-on-Suir with a tee-off time of 9.30 a.m. All those intending to play should sign up in Pauline’s before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16, so that the draw can be made.

Those travelling to Carrick should be in attendance at the course by 9 a.m. to allow time for the fees and levy to be paid. Once again visitors are welcome to join us, and participate in their own competition for their own prize.

NEW ROSS

Last weekend the AIB-sponsored open two-person team event took centre stage. There was a great entry and Paul Harrington and Eddie Morrissey were the pairing to come out on top as their score of 62 points bested the field.

Visitors David Butler (Williamstown) and Nicky Byrne (Waterford) were next best with 60 points, whilst Martin Murphy and Fr. Jim Curtis were a further two points back in third place. Thank you to AIB for their continued and generous support.

New Ross’ involvement in the inter-club competitions came to an end last weekend when the Brennan Cup team succumbed to Wicklow at the semi-final stage. To be fair, New Ross faced an uphill battle with all five matches taking place in Wicklow, and after some strong resistance New Ross came up short.

The team was managed by Davy Doran. Still, New Ross have a lot of positives to take from the year on the teams front, with good runs in the All-Ireland fourball, Barton Cup, Brennan Cup and Cullen Trophy the just rewards for the great effort put in by the teams’ co-ordinator, Martin Carroll.

On another positive note, Derek Ronan and John Evoy are county fourball champions in the All-Ireland matchplay competition. They go forward to the national finals at Carton House in September - well done and the best of luck to them!

Last week’s Tuesday fourball was sponsored by John Somers Construction Ltd. and the winners were Damian Barry (13) and Matt Kavanagh (12) with a great score of 38 points.

The categories were won by Cathal Kennedy (16) and Seamus Phelan (13), and Eddie Kent (17) and Martin Murphy (15), who both scored 36 points. Well done to the winners and thanks to John Somers for his continued support. This week’s edition is sponsored by Tom O’Brien Construction Ltd.

The August open singles, sponsored by Dunbrody House, attracted a large turn-out last Thursday. Pat Traynor (20) proved a popular winner with a very good score of 41 points, one ahead of Andy Ronan (15) who posted 40 points.

Billy Whelan (17) came home in third place on 38 points, with the gross going to Liam Murphy with 27 points. The Category A prize winners were Les Jastrzebski (25, 36 points), Tony Harford (12, 35 points) and Frank Cullen (18, 33 points).

In Category B, Tony Sexton (25, 38 points), Paddy Shannnon (10, 36 points) and Martin Forristal (20, 35 points) took home the prizes. Thank you to Dunbrody House for their continued support.

Next weekend the lady President’s prize to the men’s section takes place, with tee-times available on both Friday and Saturday - best wishes to Marie O’Connor for her weekend. On Sunday, an open three-person team event sponsored by JHG Developments takes place.

The Wexford Past Captain’s Society Captain’s prize (John Codd) takes place in St. Helen’s Bay Golf Club on Monday, August 22. The timesheet runs from 1 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. and bookings can be made by phoning St. Helen’s on 05391-33234.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

We had no team game last Thursday as it was the club open singles where the bulk of the competitors came from the Seniors group. This week we resume with our usual game and all players are reminded that the draw for teams is at 10.40 a.m. sharp - no latecomers accommodated.

On Thursday, August 26, we have an early start due to the Irish/American match following. The draw on that day will be at 9.50 a.m., so all intending players be aware of the earlier starting time and your co-operation is requested to ensure no hold-ups.

New Ross is the venue for the Autumn Seniors’ Alliance fixture on Monday, August 29, with over one hundred outside golfers expected. The timesheet will be available this Thursday.

To celebrate the Seniors’ 20th anniversary, we have arranged a very attractive stay and play package for the luxurious Ballykisteen Hotel and Golf Club on September 7 and 8.

COURTOWN JUNIORS

On Thursday just as Pádraig Harrington was teeing up in Rio, 120 Juniors, boys and girls were setting out in Courtown under ideal weather conditions with their focus firmly fixed on the Tom Funge Memorial Cups.

This is an annual open competition for Juniors held in the memory of Tom Funge, a founder of the club, and sponsored by Funge’s of Gorey. This year both sections produced local winners.

Vincent Quinlan (18) led the boys in with a magnificent score of 47 points. Jack Bambrick (Killeen, 19) was second with 43 points. Michael Fawle (Carlow, 20) was third with 41 points. Best gross went to Shane Bobbett (Tara Glen, 12) with 26 points.

In the girls’ section, Allyson McPartland (24) took the honours by returning a very good score of 40 points. She was followed by Emma Grehan (Tara Glen, 32) with a score of 37. Pia Simmons (Courtown, 36) was third with 36 points. Best gross went to Emma Fenlon (Rosslare, 12) with 23 points.

Mr. Funge thanked all who helped and especially Dermot Bolger and Elaine Murphy who train the Juniors, saying the work they were doing was laying the foundations for the future of the club.

It was nice to see that the boys’ team won the Popplewell Cup earlier in the week.

He said Courtown was also very lucky to have in their ranks, John Steedman, David Bolger and Darragh Hobbs, who have served the club with distinction. They are three inspirational young golfers and also great role models for the Juniors.

Both John and Dermot are about to start golfing scholarships, Dermot in Georgia (U.S.A.) and John in Maynooth.

The Captain, Pat Walsh, made a special presentation to them in recognition of what they had done for the club.

Mr. Funge also mentioned the late Mary O’Reilly who 18 years ago was one of a group that approached Funge’s to sponsor a Junior competition, and for the first three years she was the dynamo who got the competition up and running. Unfortunately, Mary passed away some months ago but she will be remembered with great affection.

The lady Captain, Eileen Cullen, thanked Funge’s for their sponsorship, congratulated the winners and brought proceedings to a close.

COURTOWN LADIES

Tuesday, August 9, the Pink and Blue day, brought the culmination of our two-week fundraising event in aid of the North Wexford Hospice Nursing Trust, and it promised to be a day to remember. There is nothing the members of Courtown Golf Club like more than a good cause and this event will be remembered for a long time.

The clubhouse and course were sensationally decorated with all sorts of gimmicks and gadgets, all thanks to Bronagh Stafford of Prospect Holiday Park.

The ladies’ competition went ahead as normal with sponsorship from Azure Beauty Salon. It was followed by a men’s nine-hole competition where the men had the pleasure of playing off the ladies’ tees.

Brianna and Laura of Azure Beauty Salon were in attend- ance in the clubhouse Tuesday evening doing nail painting, eyebrow shaping etc., but there was much more to come.

Following the competition prize-giving there were a few fun prizes awarded. Rita and Eamon Mahony won the best dressed couple of the evening, ‘best dressed’ being a complete oxymoron. Best dressed man went to Eamon Siggins while best dressed lady was Anne Deacon and Mary Cleere was awarded second place.

And then the real fun began. Lady Captain Eileen handed the Master of Ceremonies position for the remainder of the evening to Denis Howell. He began by extracting even more money from the assembled crowd.

Members paid for more wax strips, yes that’s right, wax strips. Some of our male members were coerced into lining up for a wax treatment.

Our Captain, Pat Walsh, was first up and he manfully endured the pain as Laura from Azure Beauty Salon treated him to a leg wax. Seamus O’Donoghue, Eamon Siggins, Jim French, Colin Sunderland and Bob Spencer all followed, having various parts of their anatomy waxed.

The varying degrees of pain they endured were for the benefit of the cause and the vicious delight of all those in attendance. Well done guys, we are all proud of you.

The evening concluded with the drawing of winners in the raffle which had been running for the past two weeks. Lady Captain Eileen thanked everybody who helped or contributed on any way in making the event a huge success.

The final amount collected has yet to be confirmed and the presentation officially made to North Wexford Hospice Nursing Trust.

First in the golf was Catherine Ledwidge (15) with 41 points, and second was Eleanor Shanley (27) with 39 points.

Third was Fiana Holland (20) with 37 points, and the category winners were: A, Ann Bernie (17), 37 points; B, Helen Cole (25), 37 points; C, Clare Kinsella (32), 36 points.

Ladies’ nine-hole: 1, Breda Spencer (25), 20 points; 2, Margaret Jones (36), 17 points.

Men’s nine-hole: 1, Martin Ryan (20), 24 points on countback; 2, Paddy Bernie (22), 24 points; 3, Vinny Kavanagh (14), 23 points.

BALLYMONEY

Wednesday nine-hole (mixed): 1, Deirdre Smith (32), 21 points; 2, Ron Breen (21), 21 points; 3, Kevin Byrne (20), 21 points.

Matchplay quarter-finals: Leighton Gleeson beat Paul Doyle, David Fitzgerald beat Eamonn Whelan.

The ladies’ singles stableford was won by Shelagh Cunningham with 37 points.

The weekend gents’ singles stableford played in very good conditions (not much wind) was won by Richard McIntyre (19) with 44 points. Paul Hayden (15) was second with 42 points, and Seán Furlong was third with 41 points.

Pádraig Grainger (23) was fourth with 40 points. A very big field took part and hopefully next Saturday will see similar good weather for Anthony Doyle’s Captain’s prize.

All members with at least six qualifiers (nine-hole included) are eligible to win the prize. The Captain’s night and prize-giving will be held in the Taravie Hotel in Courtown that night. Tickets (€10) are available at the clubhouse.
