ROSSLARE LADIES
Despite it being the silly season for groups to go abroad to avail of the good weather in Spain and Portugal for golfing breaks (and there seems to be an exodus of Rosslare ladies to these sunnier lands), there was 62 entries for our Tuesday competition on September 27.
Well done to Karen O’Keeffe on coming first with 38 points, losing two shots from her handicap in the process.
Despite the weather being so good for the month of September, Saturday week rained for most of the day and so there are no results for that day.
Tuesday, October 11, is a singles stableford competition. There will be only one more singles 18-hole competition on a Tuesday after this date, so ladies, if you want to get your handicap down, you better get cracking!

WEXFORD
Wednesday’s open 14-hole fourball was won by Anthony Corish (8) and Paul Carty (9) with 31 points on the back seven.
Friday’s three-person team event was won by Paddy McGuire (18), Damien O’Reilly (11) and John Bolger (17) with 69 points.
The weekend competition, sponsored by Ferrycarrig Active Club, was won by Seán Hopkins (6) with 41 points on the back six from Adrian Doran (8), also on 41 points. Seamus Walsh (18) was third with 39 points, also on the back six, from Dean Malone (12) in fourth place. The veterans’ prize was won by Leo Murphy (20) with 35 points.
The presentation of the Talbot Collection-sponsored monthly medal competition, run each month from April to September, took place on Sunday. The overall winner, based on the best four scores out of six, was Derek Cullen with 291 strokes, followed closely by Jim Turner with 292 strokes. Des Farrell was third with 296 strokes.

TAGHMON SOCIETY
The society headed north on the weekend before last to Coollattin. The weather was threatening heavy rain and it duly obliged after about two hours of play and 30 played. It’s the first signs of winter coming when you see balls plugging on the fairway.

Some people were just so desperate to win that one was observed in the car park prior to the game down on his knees praying to Allah for divine intervention and inspiration, but the poor sap didn’t realise that he was facing the wrong way. It might explain how poorly he played!
We are looking for members to make up teams for an inter-society competition in Enniscorthy on November 5 at only €10 per player in what will hopefully become an annual event if the initial take up is good enough. Contact Ballorr if interested.
Our next outing is the annual match against Kilmacud Crokes on Sunday, October 16, at 9.30 a.m. The current score is three all so we really need to win this one. Get practising.

On November 12 we intend to add an additional outing by going to Blainroe, and an optional stay overnight if you want to. A bus will be organised or you can travel up by car and not stay overnight. Please let the Secretary know A.S.A.P.

We travelled to Coollattin on our club outing last Saturday. Leaving St. Helen’s car park at 8.15 a.m., the mood wasn’t great as the rain poured down. A few miles into the journey the bubbly was produced, the sun came out and the mood changed.
We had a great day plotting our way through the trees in all their autumnal splendour. We were all winners, as watered and fed we returned to base a happy lot.

The ladies’ singles stableford played on Sunday was won by lady Captain Sinéad Johnson (23) on 31 points.
The heavy rain early on Saturday put paid to anyone playing in the gents’ singles stableford as the Prospect Society were playing a Ryder Cup-style matchplay competition all day once rain stopped (won by the U.S.A. team!).
Glorious weather on Sunday saw Paul Swinburn (17) win with 42 points. Christy Dodson (23) was second with 41 points, with Paul Doyle (12) in third place with 41 points also. Due to the rain on Saturday,
ENNISCORTHY LADIES
Pauline Murphy has certainly had a great golfing year in 2016 as she came out on top for the second time in a major competition on Tuesday, September 27, when she won the President’s prize to the ladies.
Pauline won the lady Captain’s prize earlier in the year. President, Eugene Doyle, presented the prizes to the participants, complimented ladies’ golf for the contribution which they make to the success of the club, and thanked everybody who participated.

Winter may be approaching but the golf competitions continue with Tuesday’s fourball being sponsored by Wheelock Fruits. The Monday opens are also continuing for October and a ladies’ open will also be held on Tuesday, October 11, which will be sponsored by Mervyn Cooney.

ENNISCORTHY
The Champion of Champions competition will be played on October 8. This is for all the overall winners and category winners in the Wednesday midweek competitions held throughout the year.
We are also re-introducing the turkey shoot competition on Sunday, October 23. More details to follow but suffice to say for the moment that the ordinary rules of golf will not be adhered to. Booking becomes available on October 14.
There will also be a raffle for free range bronze turkeys from a local supplier that should weigh 14 to 16 lbs. by Christmas time, only €2 a line or three lines for €5, and the draw for these will be held just before Christmas.
Our Monday ladies’ and gents’ open singles is proving very popular judging by the number of participants. The competition is scheduled to be on almost every Monday until well into the winter months.
The entry fee is €5 for members and €10 for visitors, open to all membership categories. If you know of anyone who might be interested in this competition then please bring them along. Where else would you get such great golfing facilities for €10? The next competition is on October 10.
The next gents’ open Seniors will be on Thursday, October 13, and the sponsor is club Vice-President Jim Hogan.
It has been decided to hold an E.G.M. regarding the installation of the lift to the lobby on Sunday, October 23, with the time to be announced at a later date. Members will get the required two weeks’ notice of the meeting via e-mail.
If you have something to say on the topic then this is your chance. If for some reason you cannot make that date then write in a letter to the Hon. Secretary and it will be read out. Only those present can vote on the night and you must be a full member to have that privilege.
The club fourball final was held on Sunday, September 25, after several months of competition and was contested by Nigel Cullen/Joe Kelly and Brian Balfe/Eddie Balfe. This competition ended up with a fitting final with there never being more than one score in it throughout the 18 holes, and so it continued when the players started again on the first, and again on the second with both holes being drawn.
So to the par three third and up stepped Nigel and landed his ball less than two feet from the pin for a simple tap-in and victory eventually. Congratulations to the worthy winners and commiserations to the losers.
The club singles was played for last Sunday between Nicky Murphy and Vincent Byrne and it too went to the wire with Nicky Murphy winning on the 18th. Great quote from Vincent: ‘I didn’t expect to get past the first round never mind get to the final’.
There is hope for us all yet. Congratulations to the worthy winners and commiserations to the losers.
The Brittle Bones results are Michael Doyle, Joe Murphy and Michael Rigley with 55 on Monday, and Matty Mernagh, Malo Roban and Neville Tector with 52.1 on Thursday last week were the winners.
It has been agreed to change the order of the course temporarily for the month of November in order to get feedback from our members. The present 16th and 17th will become the fifth and sixth. The present fifth then becomes the seventh and so on until you come to the present 15th which will become the 17th.
There is a new offer out for potential new members so spread the word to anyone you think that might be interested. The mid-season membership offer is that new and full memberships are available from now until December 31, 2017, for only €781 plus G.U.I./I.L.G.U. levies.
