GCS SETS OUT ITS STALL FOR NEW PUPILS
THERE was plenty of food for thought for the sixth class pupils and their parents who got to have a good look around Gorey Community School last week as it held its annual open evening.
Students, teachers, and staff rolled out the red carpet for the primary school pupils who are currently deciding on what secondary school to go to, if they haven’t done so already.
Principal Michael Finn was delighted the night went so well. ‘It was really, really good,’ he said. ‘ The place looked so well. I thought the school ended up being shown in the best possible light.’
‘ They really got a snapshot of what life in Gorey Community School is like,’ he added, explaining that they got advice on subject choices and various school activities.
The closing date for applications is 3 p.m. on Friday, November 11. Some 275 places will be available this year, and over 200 applications have gone in already. All applications in by the closing date will be examined, and applicants with a sibling already in the school will be offered a place first, followed by children of staff members, and then those in the feeder schools. After that, those from schools outside the catchment are invited into the school and a lottery is held to determine their place on the waiting list.
Michael commented that all on the waiting list who applied on time last year were eventually offered a place, while the 30 or 40 pupils who applied late, were unsuccessful. He said the chances of getting in if you apply late are slim.
