Edermine airstrip plan gets big boost

October 1995

-

Plans for the provision of an airstrip at Edermine just outside of Enniscorthy took a major step forward this week when Wexford County Council agreed in principle to allow its lands be used for the project.

Since the September meeting of the Council, the project has been discussed at both a special District Committee and the General Purposes Committee. Both meetings also agreed that the Council give their formal approval in principle to the project.

As part of the agreement in principle, County Manager Seamus Dooley is to prepare a report outlining details of the legal and financial arrangements with the proposers of the airstrip.

At the special District Committee meeting, a wide-ranging discussion referred to the possible economic advantages to the area of the development, the cost of progressing it to operational stage, the financing of the day-to-day operations, and the reduction in rental income to the local authority from land lettings.

At Monday’s Council meeting, Cllr. Lorcan Allen, while supporting the idea of an airstrip, urged that careful consideration be given to the financial implications before any decision is made.

Monday’s decision by the Council now clears the way for officials and proposers to sit down together and finalise all aspects of the arrangement between them.
