HORSESHOE CLUB

Congratula­tions to the Monageer horseshoe club on winning the first division league final on Saturday in the county field in ferns. It is an historic time for parish of Monageer for it’s club who won the second division league final in 2012 and for to go on and win the first division in as many years is unheard of. The Monageer team won a trilling final 5-4 against a gallant vinegar hill side. The historic winning Monageer team on the day were Brendan Earle (captain) Michael Sunderland, Walter Christophe­r, Mikie Sunderland, John Joe Byrne and Walter Dempsey. The club would like to thank the GAA club for their continuing use of their facilities for training and also the club jersey sponsor Breen Agri.

CHARITY DANCE

Charity dance in rathnure hall on Saturday, November 5, at 9.30 p.m. in aid of the Kevin Bell Repatriati­on Trust. Music by Mick Comerford. Admission €10 including tea. This charity was set up in 2013 when the Bell family lost their son in a hit and run accident in America. the KBRT aims to alleviate the financial hardship of bereaved families repatriati­ng the body or bodies of loved ones who have died abroad in sudden or tragic circumstan­ces back to ireland. Since 2013 more than 207 irish families have been helped by the foundation.

There will also be a 5km walk/ run in enniscorth­y sports hub, cherryorch­ard, enniscorth­y on Sunday, November 6.

The walk will start at 10.30 a.m. and the runners at 10.45 a.m. there will be a donation bucket on the track. We would appreciate your support so come along and walk or run whatever it is that you do.

RENEWAL OF MARRIAGE VOWS

Our Pastoral Council has arranged that this special Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, November 6, in our local church at 10 a.m. It is hoped that many married couples will take part and renew their marriage vows. A text of the renewal will be provided and couples need only read it aloud from their places in church with the other couples taking part.

BALLYGARRE­TT GOLF SOCIETY.

A great turnout, a great day was had by all in the Mark Doyle of MD Building Contractor­s sponsored day in Coolattin GC. Thirty two members took part and we wish to thank Mark for sponsoring the day and supplying fantastic prizes. Paddy Sinnott found his Mojo and came in with a great score of 35 points playing off 9. Well done to Paddy and all our winners.

The First Glass golfer of the year is presented to the most consistent golfer throughout the year, this year’s deserving winner was Eileen O’Brien. We wish to thank John Sweeney and First Glass for his generous sponsorshi­p throughout the year.

We have our last outing of the year on Saturday, November 26, in Enniscorth­y GC, the day is sponsored by Ned O’Connor Builders, this is our Christmas hamper outing and we look forward to a big turnout.

FERNS BOWLING

Bowling is going great. Ferns have played between themselves for medals and trophies. The Christophe­r Trophy was won by Joe Murphy, John Francis and Charlie Christophe­r and presented by Fred Warren. We have been playing the Wexford League and it is going great. Ferns have beat Bree and Gorey and drew with Enniscorth­y.

Folklore and local history material from counties Wexford, Wicklow and Carlow have been uploaded to the National Folklore Collection­s free website duchas. ie the material is from schools collection­s which contains folklore material recorded by pupils between 1937 and 1939. It consists of more than half a million pages of handwritte­n stories and reports noted by some 50,000 primary school children across the 26 counties. Included in this material are many gems of local interest written by pupils from 11 to 14 years from Castledock­rell NS, Marshalsto­wn NS and Monart NS. It gives an interestin­g insight of the parish in times past and has the names of the children who wrote the stories and their teachers. The website is duchas.ie.
