Over 30 objections to Killowen waste recycling facility
OVER 30 objections have been lodged against an application by Maguire Skip Hire Ltd. for the retention of the change of use of an existing agricultural yard at Killowen, Castletown, to a construction and demolition waste recycling facility.
Over 60 people attended a public meeting in The Golden Anchor, Castletown, last week in advance of the deadline for objections. Representatives of the company and the landowner were in attendance, as were concerned residents, and Cllr Joe Sullivan and Michael D’Arcy TD.
The meeting was chaired by Tadhg O’Scannall. The deadline for submissions was last Friday, and a decision is expected in early December.
The company has said it is seeking to regularise its planning application, and that the site is used for the sorting of construction and demolition materials, which are then taken away for recycling. It has said that the business will no longer be viable if retention is refused.
Concerns voiced by residents at the meeting, included the location of a proposed new entrance; noise; the suitability of local roads for commercial traffic; the impact on the water table, and on the environment; pedestrian safety; and worries that the facility could depreciate property prices.
Local resident Eileen Collins said that she brought 24 objections on behalf of locals to the Council following the meeting, and more than 30 in total were lodged before the deadline.
A report on this issue in last week’s Gorey Guardian erroneously used the term ‘ landfill’, rather than ‘a construction and demolition waste recycling facility’. Materials are sorted on site and then taken away.
