THANKS, ST MICHAEL’S PARISH, FOR SUPPORT FOR EMER’S BAKE SALE!

-

MASSGOERS at St Michael’s Church in Gorey recently dug deep in support of the fundraising efforts of a local student who was raising money for Operation Smile, an international charity which provides free surgery to children and young adults in developing countries who are born with cleft lip, cleft palate, or other facial deformities.

Emer O’Doherty (16), a transition year student at Gorey Community School hopes to go abroad to volunteer with the charity next year. She will pay for the cost of her trip herself, so every cent raised will go directly to the charity.

She and her family and friends held a charity bake sale over two days in St Michael’s Pastoral Centre in Gorey. Emer was delighted to announce that over €3,400 was raised. ‘This is more than enough for 14 children’s surgeries,’ she said. ‘The support from the community was amazing. So many people were willing to show support and give donations.’

Special thanks went to those who donated cakes and buns, including Stafford’s Bakery; Barnland Nurseries for flowers; and Cullen’s Fruit and Veg for fruit baskets.

Those who donated raffle prizes were also thanked, including: Dominic Smith Electrical; Eric Maguire; The Duck restaurant; Liam Brennan Hardware; Pettitt’s SuperValu; Tesco Extra Gorey; Wow hair salon; and Lloyd’s Pharmacy.

‘I was really overwhelmed by the response,’ said Emer also thanking the parish, and all who helped on the day.
