Skips left on public roads face new regulations

-

NEW skip bye-laws are expected to be introduced in Gorey.

At last Tuesday’s meeting of Gorey Municipal District the members heard from Mick McCormack of Wexford County Council who said that the county wide bye laws are being introduced to bring a level of consistency across Wexford.

He said they will also improve health and safety and will relate to the positioning of skips on public roads. Another key feature of the bye laws will be the removal of skips once full adding that they will now need to be removed within 24 hours of filling.

All skips on public roads will also need public liability insurance.

Mr McCormack said there are currently bye laws in force in New Ross and Wexford and these new bye laws will replace the existing ones in these towns.

Cllr Pip Breen welcomed the introduction of the new laws saying it will bring clarity saying that ‘nobody seems to know what’s going on with skips’.

However Cllr Robbie Ireton raised concerns about the level of public liability insurance saying €13million was ‘an enormous amount’. However Mr McCormack said that this was the standard level of public liability.

Cllr Breen said that the new laws will encourage people to bring skips onto their own property rather than leave them on public roads.
