WALK IN THE PARK FOR TALK TO TOM
TALK To Tom is preparing to host ‘A Walk In The Park’, a 24 -hour event which runs in Gorey Town Park from 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, to 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 11.
The event has been organised to highlight the struggle faced by those suffering from depression and other mental health illnesses. Participants can walk or run around the track any time over the 24-hours, or groups can take part in shifts.
It begins on Saturday with a candlelight vigil in memory of those lost to sicide. Entry is €10 per adult, and €5 for students. All proceeds go directly towards free one-to-one counselling services.
Families are encouraged to attend an open day on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., which will include fun and games. Representatives from the emergency services will also be there to showcase their work.
Talk To Tom Chairman Liam Flynn has said the event will offer something for everyone in the community. ‘A Walk In The Park is an important and poignant message to get out to those who are secretly suffering in our community,’ he said. ‘Sometimes it’s those with biggest smiles who are suffering the most. The irony is beating illnesses such as depression is no walk in the park. But if you reach out and ask for help, be it from a friend, family member or even a stranger - you can beat it.’
A special Christmas tree will be set up where people can place a decoration in memory of someone they have lost.
