Dessie on target in Germany

GOrey man Dessie Owens won two prestigiou­s trophies at a shooting competitio­n in Germany recently.

Dessie who is a former member of St Enda’s GAA club was part of a four man Irish team, the Irish Rimfire Benchrest team, who travelled to Hamminkeln, Germany, to compete in the largest shooting competitio­n of its type in Europe this year with 70 invited shooters competing from over ten countries.

Dessie who is a member of the Hilltop Sporting Club in Newtownmou­ntkennedy, Wicklow won the BR 50 Hamminkeln Cup and the BR50 Hamminkeln Masters Cup which are the two main perpetual trophies up for grabs at the tournament.

There is also a team event which uses the combined scores of three nominated individual­s from a country for their three cards on the Saturday shoot. Team Ireland came 1st in the Team event with over 22 teams competing.

Team Ireland also won the ‘Ireland vs. UK Challenge cup’, based on the team totals over 5 Heavy varmint cards each.

Shortly after his return home Dessie also won the National title for three different classes in rimfire Benchrest, which no other person has previously achieved.
