THE street lights in one section of Branogue Park in Ardamine were finally returned to working order recently after a sixmonth campaign by residents, only for the two other rows of houses in the estate to be plunged into darkness.

The lights in the back row of houses were turned off in May due to an issue with the way they were connected. After a lengthy campaign by residents, they were finally connected on November 9.

However, the following week, the street lights in the two other rows were shut off. Residents Association secretary Ruth Murphy said that they have been told that the issue is between the estate developer, the ESB, and the Council which is in the process of taking the estate in charge.

‘Let’s hope it isn’t another six months before these lights are switched on,’ she said, adding that they have been told that new safety units have to be installed in the remainder of the estate.

She paid tribute to Cllr Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin who lobbied on their behalf since the summer. ‘It’s a bad time of the year to have houses in darkness,’ she said.

Cllr Ó Súilleabháin said he understood the residents’ concerns, but feared that it could be January before work is undertaken to bring the lighting system into line with modern requirements. He said he is working with the Council and the ESB on the issue and is urging them to make it a priority and get it sorted.
