F.C.J. earn derby spoils

F.C.J. (BUNCLODY) 1-13 ENNISCORTHY C.B.S. 2-8 A LOCAL derby between F.C.J. (Bunclody) and Enniscorthy C.B.S. ended in the former’s favour, with a two-point margin to spare, in the group stage of the Top Oil Leinster Colleges Senior hurling ‘B’ championship in St. Patrick’s Park recently.

Bunclody were maintaining their unbeaten record with this second victory, while the C.B.S. lost their previous outing against Gorey Community School by a narrow margin so now have to win their remaining two matches if they are to have any hope of continuing.

F.C.J. opened the stronger, having two points on the board, courtesy of Chris Turner and Cillian Redmond, before C.B.S. opened their account in the tenth minute with a point from Diarmuid Doyle.

C.B.S. added three points in the following ten minutes, two coming from the accurate free-taking of Conor Nolan, while James Kelly added the third. The sole Bunclody reply came from Josh Martin.

Entering the final ten minutes of the half, the visitors levelled with a point from their lively full-forward, Chris Turner. The remaining minutes saw F.C.J. going ahead with further points from Turner and Cian Fitzhenry while St. Mary’s only score was a magnificent point by David Kehoe from a very narrow angle. Thus, the interval score stood at 0-6 to 0-5 in favour of F.C.J.

The first five minutes of the second-half were full of action and scores. First, F.C.J. moved substantially ahead when Cathal Doyle ran onto a long pass from the throw-in and doubled on the ground to send the ball to the C.B.S. net within 15 seconds of the re-start.

However, further drama was to transpire at the other end when, within two minutes of that score, St. Mary’s dangerman Diarmuid Doyle caught a long ball from Cathal Walsh, rounded his man and evaded another defender to balance the books with a stunning major, again leaving the minimum between the sides.

F.C.J. made better use of the rest of the third quarter, adding four unanswered points courtesy of free-taker Chris Turner (two), Edward Dunbar and Cathal Doyle.

When it looked like Bunclody were going to stroll home, with a gap of five points in their favour entering the final quarter, Pierce Murphy, the St. Mary’s active full-forward, soloed from outfield and shot to the net with a piledriver, closing the gap to two points with twelve minutes to go.

Further exchanges of points - Chris Turner for F.C.J. (three), while James Kelly, Jack Reck and Chris Nolan replied for C.B.S. - did nothing to close that two-point gap and so it ended on a scoreline of 1-13 to 2-8.
