Neuromuscular physical therapy for all pain types

-

DO you suffer with pain? Sometimes you may need a combination approach which could include medication, supplements, and complimentary treatments for long term relief.

Neuromuscular Physical Therapy is used in the treatment of both chronic and acute pain. Fiona Dempsey from Carrigeen Clinic practises this therapy and treats all types of pain, including soft tissue injury. Neuromuscular Physical Therapy gives special focus to the treatment of trigger points. These are points in the body which develop as a result of overuse or injury to the muscle. Knots form in the muscle because of the lack of oxygenated blood flow to the area, resulting in pain.

In some case there are satellite trigger points which actually cause the pain in a different area of the body. So while you may present to Fiona with a pain in your hip the trigger point for the pain could be in your back. So this is where the treatment is focused. Pain may also result from soft tissue (tight muscles) which can compress nerves, resulting in pain. Examples include repetitive strain injury, bad posture, frozen shoulder, sprains, and all kinds of sports injuries.

So how does it work? Using specialised techniques called Soft Tissue Release, Positional Release, Strain/ Counter Strain, Deep Tissue Massage, and Trigger Point Therapy, harmony and balance can be restored between the nervous system and the soft tissue systems. These treatments encourage circulation and enhance lymphatic drainage helping to reduce inflammation in the body. It enhances the function of all the joints, muscles and the movement of joints in the body.

Frozen shoulder and repetitive strain injury are by far the most common conditions that Fiona treats. You may need a number of treatments, and may have to make some minor changes and adaptions to your activities so that you can return to normal life.

Fiona also takes into account your nutrition, lifestyle, and emotional wellbeing. Simple lifestyle activities can be the cause of pain. You won’t want to give up your job or your favourite hobby but certain adjustments and techniques can be taken into consideration going forward.
