Wexford students impress at Young Scientist in RDS

STUDENTS FROM two Wexford secondary schools received awards at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition at the weekend.

Niamh Tennant and Olivia Morris from Meanscoil Gharman, Enniscorth­y, created an app called Funky Focail. The concept of the idea is to help people with dyslexia and other learning difficulti­es. The project was highly recommende­d by the judges.

Another ‘ highly recommende­d’ ribbon was given to students from Loreto Secondary School, Wexford, for their entry in the social and behavioura­l sciences category. Amy Richards, Sadhbh Cullinane and Rebecca Thomas from Loreto investigat­ed ‘attitudes and perception­s towards antibiotic use and antimicrob­ial resistance’.

Niamh O’Dowd and Kate Kirwan from FCJ Secondary School in Bunclody created a project that measured radon awareness in high-risk areas.

FCJ principal Eoin Ó Donnagáin said: ‘ They did an absolutely fantastic job at presenting their project to the judges and general public. They got a lot of media attention, we are so proud of the effort, hard work and determinat­ion that they put into this.’

Meanwhile, sixth class pupils from Kilrane National School got a lot of media attention with their Young Scientist project. Their project, ‘Can you become a human lie detector?’, a study of the human brain, featured on news2day on RTE last Thursday.

The Kilrane school were one of nine primary schools from the county that exhibited at the RDS Primary Science Fair, which took place alongside the Young Scientist Exhibition.

Scoil Mhuire, Our Lady’s Island: ‘Which is the most effective environmen­tally friendly cleaner?’

St Patrick’s National School, Crossabeg: ‘What are the best conditions for the growth of grass?

St Anne’s National School, Duncormick: ‘What do worms do in the soil?’

Bunscoil Loreto, Gorey: ‘Which parachute can land an egg best?’

Scoil Náisiúnta Baile an Phiarsaigh, Drinagh: ‘Does adding substances to water change the rate at which skin wrinkles?’
