Power goal sends Rangers packing

-

DIVISION 2 side Adamstown caused the biggest shock in the third round of the Wexford Volkswagen Cup on Sunday as they knocked Premier Division outfit Rosslare Rangers out of the competition.

Barry Power grabbed the only goal of the game to see the underdogs through to the next round.

Another top flight side to make an early exit were Campile United, although given their struggles in the league a 5-2 loss to Division 1 high-flyers Bridge Rovers wasn’t unexpected.

Kevin Murphy showed the way for the Castlebridge side with a hat-trick, with Derek Walsh and Daniel Murphy adding a goal apiece.

Kilmore United, who are also enduring a tough season in the Premier Division, had to fight hard to see off the attentions of Enniscorthy Town but they eventually prevailed 3-1.

Devin Furlong gave Kilmore an early advantage but Town levelled matters with the last kick of the game.

The hosts re-grouped, however, and substitutes David Millar and Seán Hogan scored in each half of extra-time to send last season’s runners-up through.

The other Premier Division teams had easier passages to the fourth round, with Bunclody topping the scoring stakes with a resounding 14-1 win over Rosslare Port B.

Shane Franklin and Johnny Melay both contributed hat-tricks, with P.J. Mulhall, Johnny Thorpe, Timmy Halpin, Chris Atkinson (two), James Fitzpatrick, Eddie Black and Chris Kelly all getting in on the act.

North End United weren’t too far behind as they overpowered Cushinstown B 10-0 thanks to four goals from Andy Moore and one apiece from Jason Murphy, Adam Beary, Danny Fitzpatrick, Gary Byrne, Stuart Lawlor and Charlie Heffernan (penalty).

North End extend sympathy to Lee Wadding-Byrne and family on the sad death of his father, Liam.

Thomas Cloke, Ger Carey and Jake Cassidy all netted doubles for Gorey Celtic as they beat Bree United B 7-1, with Kenneth Byrne getting their other goal and Seán Ring replying for Bree.

Eoin Rhodes grabbed a double for New Ross Celtic as they overcame Oylegate United 3-0, with Dylan Egan adding the other goal for the visitors.

Ray Mahon’s first-half goal was enough for Moyne Rangers to see off the brave challenge of Stoney Rovers.

Elsewhere Shamrock Rovers were too good for Wexford Celtic, running out 5-0 winners (see focus match).

Corach Ramblers booked their place in the next round with a 5-2 win over Wexford Bohs B, with M.J. Doran (two), Niall Harney, Philly Murphy and Mick Walsh scoring for the winners, and Aaron Walsh and Craig Kelly replying for Bohs.

Darren Jordan was the match-winner for Forth Celtic, scoring the only goal of the game in injury time to edge out Taghmon United.

Wexford Bohs were too good for Shamrock Rovers B and ran out 5-2 winners, with Aaron Lambert, Seán Pailing, Derek Bergin and Dermot Flood (two) scoring for Bohs and Willie Dobbs replying with a double.

Martin Flynn helped himself to a hat-trick for Killenagh Wanderers as they overwhelmed Ferns United B 5-0, with Brian O’Connor and Jordan Goff also getting on the scoresheet.

Division 3A leaders Wexford Albion completely outclassed Rosslare Strand, with Kyle Mahon scoring five, Liam O’Connor adding four and Pierce Dooley grabbing the other two in an 11-1 triumph, with Conor Clancy on the mark for Strand.

Raheen overcame the challenge of Rosslare Rangers B 3-1 thanks to a double from Dylan Whitty and a Frank Staples strike, while St. Cormac’s beat St. Leonards by the same scoreline, with Jamie Doyle, Michael Rossiter and James Sweeney scoring for the winners.

North End United C comfortably came out on top in their derby clash with Wexford Albion B, winning 4-0 with goals from Pa Beary (two), Kieran Carmody and Seán Mullins.

The prolific Nicky Sinnott netted a double for Cushinstown as they won 4-1 away to St. Cormac’s B, with Jason Dunne and Colin Whelan getting their other goals.

However, there was no joy for North End’s B team as they lost out 4-3 on penalties to Tombrack United after a 1-1 draw.

Jamie Walsh put Tombrack ahead but Dylan O’Brien converted a penalty to draw the town side level.

Ajax Athletic B sprang somewhat of a surprise by knocking out Division 2A strugglers Fethard Rangers.

The Enniscorthy team, who line out in Division 4A, won 3-2 thanks to goals from Tommy O’Brien, Derek Kearns and Chris Hendrick.

Dylan Ring grabbed the winner for Ballymurn as they edged out Bree United in a seven-goal thriller. P.J. Bourke (two) and Stephen Redmond got the other goals for the winners.

Les Walters was the main man for Duncannon B as they saw off St. Joseph’s B 4-1. Walters netted a hat-trick for the winners, with Jimmy Rossiter adding their other goal.
