New route for Gorey 5k Night Run

- BY FINTAN LAMBE

THE organisers of the second annual Gorey 5km Night Run, which kicks off at Gorey Library at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, have announced an all-new route for this year’s event.

‘Gorey town has seen some great advances in terms of infrastructure in the last few years with various new roads opened around the town,’ said organiser Cllr John Hegarty. ‘Last year we included the Paul Funge Boulevard as part of our route, and this year we wanted to include the recently opened link road from the back of the Showgrounds right the way up to Creagh College.’

‘It is a really lovely part of town that many people may not be aware of, and it is an ideal opportunity to show off a new part of town,’ he added.

The Night Run route starts at the Library; turning left onto the Avenue; turning down the main street at The 64; turning at Pettitt’s, and back up to John Street; out past the theatre hall and Showgrounds; before turning left up the new link road.

The runners will then go the whole way up to the gates of Creagh College before turning for home via the Woodbury road to the Craanford road, across the road at the Monument and down the Paul Funge Boulevard before finishing up the Avenue and back to the library.

The organisers advise that there will be some minor traffic delays during the run, but the gardaí and stewards will be there to provide assistance.

In another new development this year, the race will be chip timed for all participants.

‘We are delighted to be able to provide exact timing for everyone thanks to the generosity of our main sponsors - Gorey Credit Union, Redmond Hotel Group, Innovate, and Weatherglaze,’ said John. ‘ The contribution of these businesses means that again this year, every cent of every entry fee will go directly to North Wexford Hospice.’

Registration for the Gorey 5k Night Run is still open on Gorun.ie for anyone who would like to receive a 2017 Gorey Night Run t-shirt. People can also register on the night.
