How well do you know your ABCs?

A VITAMIN is a vital nutrient that the body requires to stay healthy. Some vitamins are produced by the body and others are in the food that we eat daily. Some vitamins are water soluble, which means that the body cannot store them. Other vitamins are fat soluble and are stored in the liver for use later.

Vitamins A, C, D and E are called anti-oxidants. They have many functions within the body; they protect cells from damage as well as providing nutrients.

Vitamin A is important for all of the mucous membranes in the body, from the eyes and nose to the mouth, throat, and stomach. Dry mouth is a common sign of Vitamin A deficiency and is associated with night blindness.

Vitamin C supports immunity and is a natural antihistamine, and anti-oxidant. It’s part of the building blocks of collagen which will keep you looking young. Vitamin C helps to build connective tissue making it an important part of healthy bones and joints. It can help the breakdown of arterial plaque. It helps wounds to heal, supports the smallest capillaries in the skin, and aids in the absorption of iron. A common sign of deficiency is if you bruise easily.

Vitamin D supports immunity, is an excellent anti-viral, is an antioxidant, and it helps improve mood. It aids bone health by assisting the absorption of nutrients and strengthening the bone. Low mood, pain, and repeated viral infections are common signs of deficiency.

Vitamin E has a long association with the skin, the heart, and is important for blood flow and for all blood vessels helping to keep them supple and elastic. Some women find it helpful for hot flushes. It’s used in the treatment of Rosacea to support the tiny blood vessels in the cheeks, and it helps reduce scarring of the internal tissues caused by endometriosis.

B vitamins are important energy nutrients; they help deal with stress and are important for skin, hair, nails and digestion.

A good healthy diet should provide you with all the nutrients you need. But, from time to time you may need additional support. Talk to the trained staff at your local health store and they will help you find the right vitamin mix to suit your needs.
