U-16 girls beaten by Dubs

DUBLIN B 3-8, WEXFORD B 1-4: A 2-5 scoring run at the start of the second-half put paid to the Wexford challenge in the second round of fixtures in the Leinster Under-16 ‘B’ camogie championship at O’Toole Park, Crumlin, on Sunday.

The Slaneysiders came into the game with an impressive victory over Westmeath under their belts but found the strong challenge of the Metropolitans a little too hot to handle.

With the midfield putting in the hard yards, Leanne Rowe excelling at full-back and Niamh Dempsey making several strong saves between the posts, the visitors gave as good as they got in the opening half.

Promising young Horeswood forward Elena Kenny opened the scoring with a point in the eighth minute, a score countered by Dublin’s Emma Parker. After a quiet opening quarter, Aoife Dempsey kicked the game into life with a 16th-minute goal.

Wexford’s lead lasted only four minutes as Meghan Roche hit back to ease Dublin 1-2 to 1-1 ahead.

After Chloe O’Connor struck for the hosts, Mary Kate Doyle responded for the purple and gold to leave just one between the sides at the break.

The third quarter was not kind to the visitors, Dublin racked up five points in a row to extend their lead to 1-8 to 1-2. Still, the game was in the balance until the hosts bagged two quick majors, with Sinéad Richardson and Deirdre McCarthy on target.

To their credit Wexford battled away right to the death. Emma Dempsey, maybe the most impressive of the attackers, pointed to make it 3-8 to 1-3. Mary Kate Doyle added her second in added time but it wasn’t enough to deny the hosts.

Wexford have a week off now as attention for the dual players turns to ladies’ football. The Slaneysiders will be back in action on Sunday week when they host Carlow in their final group game.
