Brosnan transfer row to linger on

THE inter-county future of Ben Brosnan for 2017 could yet be determined by Wexford G.A.A.

The county footballer is at the centre of a storm, after his request to transfer from Bannow-Ballymitty to Castletown rejected by a County Board sub-committee.

Playing some of the best football of his career, Brosnan turned in a man of the match display in Wexford’s victory over London last Sunday, emerging from the game with a personal tally of eleven points.

Now the player - who runs his sportswear company from Gorey Business Park - is anxious to link up with Castletown, but the committee comprised of 14 people rejected his application.

The Castletown club feel the player is being wronged and being denied his right to join them.

Club Chairman, Gabriel Maxwell, said at the weekend ‘we will be taking this appeal to the DRA and as far as possible.

‘We cannot understand the decision as the player is eligible to play with us. We will take this to the DRA should we have to,’ he added.

Meanwhile, the GPA are holding a watching brief on behalf of the player and have asked to be kept updated on the matter before deciding on what course of action, if any, should be taken.

Bannow-Ballymitty have given the player their full backing, signing the relevant transfer documents while also issuing a letter to Brosnan wishing him the best of luck in his new venture.

Now the matter is likely to come before tonight’s (Tuesday) County Board meeting for further discussion.

If Brosnan fails in his bid to transfer, and if he doesn’t re-register with Bannow-Ballymitty, he may become ineligible to feature with Wexford at inter-county level, as he would not be a registered member of a club contrary to G.A.A. rules.
