5K Night Run turns into €10K for Hospice

-

THE valuable work of North Wexford Hospice Homecare was greatly helped last week when the organisers of the recent Gorey 5K Night Run presented a cheque for €10,000.

‘We’re delighted with the amount of money raised for such a worthy cause,’ said Cllr John Hegarty on behalf of the race organising committee. ‘In two years we’ve raised just under €20,000 which is a phenomenal amount of money.’

He thanked main sponsor Gorey Credit Union, sponsors Weatherglaze, Innovate, and Redmond Hotels, and all the individuals and businesses that helped. ‘Over 750 runners took part which far exceeded last year,’ he said. ‘For our second year, it was just phenomenal and it shows the great commu- nity spirit that exists around the town.’

‘We started from scratch just under 12 months ago, and it seems to have caught the imagination,’ he added. ‘We’re already planning next year’s run which will be bigger and better.’

Thanking all involved, Noeleen Furlong of North Wexford Hospice said the money will be used to pay the hospice nurses. She said the group itself organises two main fundraisers each year - the barbecue, and the coffee mornings, but they depend on the public to raise the rest of the money required.

The hospice barbecue takes place on Saturday, May 13, in The Amber Springs Hotel, Gorey. Tickets at €25 are available from any committee member or from James Tomkins Garage.
