Wexford pair in golden form

Browne and Hayes shine

FERRYBANK A.C. held their annual open track and field day in Waterford last Sunday. It was a good day for running with little wind and an air temperatur­e that was neither too warm nor too cold.

There was a very good attendance with clubs from counties Waterford, Kilkenny, Cork, Tipperary, Wexford, Carlow, Dublin and Meath. For most athletes this was their first outdoor meet of the new track and field season, a welcome opportunit­y to shake the winter lead from the legs.

Athletes from Co. Wexford clubs made a big impression. Several athletes made the podium in more than one event including Aaron Browne (United Striders) - gold in the Under-16 100m and 800m; Maeve Hayes (St. Paul’s) - gold in Under-16 hurdles and high jump, silver in shot; Jack Forde (St. Killian’s) - silver and bronze Under-15.

Orla Byrne (S.B.R.), Saidhbhe (Enniscorth­y) and a quartet of Bree athletes - Abbie Doyle, Gracie Keogh, Jayden Kenny and Shane Laffan - all won multiple medals. Bree came away with two sets of relay medals - gold in Under-11 girls and bronze in Under-9 boys. United Striders took silver in the Under-15 boys’ relay.

The inter-varsity track and field championsh­ips took place in Cork last weekend. Co. Wexford was well represente­d.

Annie Stafford (D.C.U.) placed fifth in the long jump with 5.17m. Emma Owens (D.C.U.) made a great start to her outdoor season with four new P.B’s in the women’s hammer.

She ended up in fourth place with a best of 44.49m. Emma also placed fourth in the discus.

In the men’s hammer, Kieran Murphy (W.I.T.) finished in seventh place with a throw of 44.05m. Conor Wilson (A.I.T.) was fourth in the 100m (11.42s) and sixth in the 200m (23s).

Shaun Donohoe was delighted with his 49.79s in the 400m (sixth place). Conor Gaffney (U.C.D.) was sixth in the men’s 400m hurdles. Enniscorth­y athlete Peter O’Connor (I.T. Carlow) was seventh in the 100m hurdles. Peter also placed sixth in the javelin (38.31m).

Tim Bowler (U.C.D.) was eighth in the high jump (1.75m). Jane Shovlin (M.U.) was tenth in the long jump. The W.I.T. team in the men’s 4 x 100m relay consisted of three Wexford athletes - Tony Stafford, Shaun Donohoe and Michael Deady. They were a respectabl­e sixth in the final. Conor Gaffney was part of the U.C.D. team which placed fourth.
