ESTHER HAYDEN EXTRACTS THE WEXFORD STATS FROM THE CENSUS 2016 SUMMARY RESULTS

THE population of Wexford increased 3 per cent over the past five years according to the first results from Census 2016.

Released by the Central Statistics Office last Thursday, the figures show that Ireland’s population stood at 4,761,865 in April 2016, an increase of 173,613 (3.8 per cent) since April 2011. The population of County Wexford stood at 149,722 in April 2016, an increase of 3.0 per cent over the five years.

The total number of non-Irish nationals in the country has fallen slightly to 535,475, or 11.6 per cent of the population, the first decline since the introducti­on of this question in 2002.

The number of people with dual-Irish nationalit­y has increased by 48,879 to 104,784 people since April 2011.

As well as detailing the overall change in the population since April 2011, Census 2016 Summary Results Part 1 provides informatio­n on age profile, marital status, families, nationalit­y, Irish language, foreign languages, religion and housing.

The summary results show that women outnumber men in Wexford with the county’s population in April 2016 comprising of 73,722 males and 76,000 females.

Nationally there were 53,009 more females than males in the State in April 2016, giving an overall sex ratio of 97.8 males for every 100 females, a slight decline on the 2011 ratio of 98.1.

The number of households in Wexford is 54,289 compared to 1,702,289 nationally and the most common type of dwelling in Wexford is detached. This is also the most common house type nationally, although the number of detached dwellings in Wexford stands at 61.4 per cent compared to 42.1 per cent in the country overall.

The average number of people per household in both Wexford and nationally is 2.7.

The average age of Wexford’s population in April 2016 was 38.1 years, compared to 36.5 years in April 2011.

Nationally, the average age of the population was 37.4, up from 36.1 in April 2011.

The number of males aged 65 and over increased by 22 percent to 296,837, while the number of females aged 65 and over increased by 16.7 per cent to 340,730.

The number of men and women combined aged 65 upwards in Wexford is 21,985 according to Census 2016.

The number of divorced or separated people in Wexford is almost one per cent above the national average. The Census 2016 figures show that there are 8,338 people divorced/separated in Wexford, a rate of 5.6 per cent, compared to the national rate of 4.7 per cent.

The number of divorced people in Ireland has increased to 103,895 (18 per cent) since 2011. The number of separated people increased slightly to 118,178 (from 116,194 in 2011).
