CARNEW MUSICAL SOCIETY

Carnew Musical Society will celebrate their 50th anniversar­y with an Anniversar­y Concert on Easter Sunday night, April 16, in St Brigid’s Hall commencing at 8 p.m. This is a once in a lifetime concert, which has brought over 50 past and present members together under the musical direction of Lar Duffy to perform what will be a wonderful and nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Many of those who have played principal roles with the society will be performing in the concert along with lots of familiar faces from choruses over the years. Choreograp­her for the past two shows, Graham Finnerty, will be taking on the role of directing the concert.

Tickets at a cost of €15 for Adults and €10 for Students are now available from Mrs Kennedy, Main Street Carnew, from Carnew Training and Developmen­t Centre or from any of the Carnew Musical Society Committee. Don’t miss this truly special event.

HOLY WEEK CEREMONIES

The Mass of the Lord’s Supper will be celebrated in St Cormac’s church on Thursday, April 13, at 8 p.m. On Good Friday, the service will be at 3 p.m. with Stations of the Cross at 8 p.m. The Vigil Mass for Easter will start at 9 p.m. on Easter Saturday night with Masses on Easter Sunday morning at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.

SKY DIVE FUNDRAISER

Monica Gahan, Ballyorley is hoping to raise money on behalf of YSPI – Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland by jumping out of a plane. He daughters Elaine and Anna are also going to make the leap to help raise funds for this worthy group. YSPI depend on donations to fund their work

The annual Poker Classic organised by Monageer-Boolavogue GAA and camogie clubs, will be held on Monageer Hall on Good Friday, April 14, starting at 8.30 p.m. Entry for players costs €20 and refreshmen­ts will be served throughout.

KIDS’ CLUB

There will be a Kids’ Club organised in Ferns Community Centre on Tuesday, April 11, from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. for children from five to 12 years of age. Activities will include games, art and crafts, Easter story and tasty snacks. For details, please contact Johanna at 086 1621546.

TIDY VILLAGE

Please remember that the Boolavogue Tidy Village group are organising a ‘Spring Clean’ in and around Boolavogue on Saturday, April 15. They would appreciate as much help as possible. Large strong rubbish bags as well as special ‘claws’ or ‘pickers’ will be provided for those involved. The group will be starting from St Cormac’s church at 2 p.m. on the 15th.

The group will also be holding their annual sponsored walk on Sunday, April 30. Cards for the sponsored walk are available from Lawless’ shop and any money raised will be used to help keep Boolavogue clean, tidy and beautiful.

GAA NEWS

Monageer-Boolavogue under-12 hurlers have started their season in winning style by emerging victorious in the final of the Rathnure Indoor Hurling Tournament. They gave a great performanc­e on Tuesday, April 4, to beat Graiguenam­agh of Kilkenny in the final. In a thrilling game, brilliant goalkeepin­g and staunch defending set them up to pick off super scores. They have also qualified for the final of the Craanford Indoor Tournament, beating St Pat’s in the quarter final and overcoming a very strongly fancied Marshalsto­wn team to progress to the final.

On Tuesday, April 4, the men’s ‘A’ team were away to Tombrack and collected maximum points on a well deserved 2-1 win. ‘Roddy’ Doyle gave them an early lead, converting a penalty kick awarded when the on-form James Sweeney was taken down in the area. The match was halted for a long while shortly afterwards when the Tombrack keeper was injured and could not be moved till he received medical attention. The delay affected our lads and Tombrack snapped back with a great goal to level the game from a corner. In the second half, ‘Roddy’ shot from 25 yards out to score the winning goal. In an excellent team performanc­e, Matthew Dunne was the ‘man-of-thematch’.

On Saturday the eighth. the under-11s were away to St Leonards and in a tight game, the sides were level 0-0 at the break. An own goal gave us the lead early in the second half and Alex Keegan doubled the lead shortly afterwards. St Leonards fought back to make the game 2-1 but Bobby Codd put the game out of their reach when he rounded the defence and shot to the top corner near the end of the game.

On Sunday last, the ladies’ team were at home to Cushinstow­n in the Gaynor cup semi-final and won, booking their place in the final against Ajax on Sunday, April 23, in St Joseph’s, Kilmuckrid­ge. This means that for the third year in a row, they will play in the cup final.

300-1 CLUB

Congratula­tions to Aidan Kehoe, Glenbaun, who scooped the €150 top prize in the March 3001 club draw. The second prize, €50 went to Eugene and Siobhán O’Leary, Garrybritt while Willy and Mary Nolan, the Harrow, Niall and Bridget O’Loughlin, Ballycarri­geen, Dorothy and Walter Hall, Tomnaboley, and Des and Betty Doyle, Knocknasge­ach won €25 prizes.

BOXING FOR SOCCER

St Cormac’s are still looking for volunteers who are willing to undergo a tough training regime for the ‘White Collar Boxing’ tournament between St Cormac’s and St Joseph’s. This tournament will take place on Saturday, October 21, and will feature 12 bouts. Full training will be given

Once again audiences for South Wicklow Drama Festival were treated to a wonderful feast of Drama which saw St Brigid’s Hall full to capacity on many of the nights. The festival was officially closed by Fr Joe Power PP, Kilrush and president of Kilrush Drama Group, but before that, the Ajudicator gave his final adjudicati­on and results for what was an incredible nine nights with plays performed to an extremely high standard.

However, as it was a competitio­n, someone had to win and the results for the 2017 South Wicklow Drama Festival were as follows.

The senior room took a trip to Dublin on Thursday, March 30, They had a guided tour of Glasnevin Cemetery followed by a visit to Dublinia. They also visited the Dail where they had the opportunit­y to sit in the Seanad.

On Monday, April 3, the junior room visited Springmoun­t Garden Centre where Olive kindly took the children through each area explaining everything to them.

We are busy preparing for Active Schools week from April 24 to April 28th when we will have cycling and cycling safety lessons in school. We will also be walking through Camolin woods.

LATE MARTIN MURPHY

Jenny Murphy, Clone Road, Ferns would like to thank everyone who called to help and support her on the death of her beloved husband Martin (formerly Tomadilly, Marshalsto­wn).
