It’s time to don your running shoes
IT’S time to don your running shoes, as preparations are well under way for the 3rd Wexford Marathon, which is due to take place on Sunday, June 11. Hundreds of runners are expected in the town for what has been described as one of the most stunning 26.2 courses in Ireland.
The course will leave from the Quay and will wind its way past Rathaspeck and Johnstown, Murrintown, across part of Forth Mountain to Taghmon and Holmestown before heading back to Murrintown and the final leg.
There will be quite a few hills and a few challenges along the way, but with a few weeks to go, there’s still plenty of time break out the running shoes, build up the miles and register for a truly memorable race.
Entry is €50 and prizes include finisher medals and Men’s & Women’s 1st Prize €350, 2nd €150 and 3rd €50.
In addition to the full marathon, a team relay (four runners) is being introduced this year and runners are encouraged to get hold of a sponsorship card and make a difference to Wexford-based counselling serice ‘Its Good 2 Talk’ and to somebody’s life.
Dee Boland, race organiser, said: ‘We are thrilled this year to have increased our sponsorship and to have support from Sports Active Wexford, Joyces, Graphedia, Dunnes Stores, Coca- Cola, the HSE, the local gardaí and Wexford Chamber.
‘ There is huge interest in the race and registrations are pouring in. This year’s Marathon will bring hundreds of runners and their supporters to Wexford and hopefully it will be the first of many visits to our lovely county.’ Madeleine Quirke, CEO Wexford Chamber, said marathons are important events with sports tourism now recognised as a highly lucrative sector in the global travel industry. ‘ There is no doubt that Wexford will benefit from all of the positive publicity around this event.’
