Death takes place of well-known gynaecologist
DR. DIARMUID Mooney who died on May 1, was a wellknown Consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist at Wexford General Hospital for many years up to his retirement in 2000.
Diarmuid was born in September 1936 and spent a considerable part of his early childhood in Wexford town. He attended St Peter’s College, along with his brothers Niall and Des.
He studied medicine in UCD, and graduated in 1961. He subsequently attained membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians London, and was later awarded a Fellowship from that College.
The early part of his professional life saw Diarmuid appointed as consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist in Tullamore General Hospital, where he worked for 13 years. He was very pleased to be appointed to Wexford General Hospital as Obstetrician/Gynaecologist in 1984, and remained there until his retirement in the year 2000. It is for this role that he will be best remembered.
Diarmuid was an avid reader, had a very keen interest in history and was a member of Wexford Historical Society. He was also a member of Probus, an association for retired and semi-retired professional and business people. Much of his spare time was spent gardening.
Above all, Diarmuid was a family man. He is survived by Mary, his loving wife of 50 years; his daughters, Órla, Síona and Eimear; his sons-in-law, Noel, Ronan and John; his brother Des and his sister Eithne. He was predeceased by his brothers Niall and Donal. He will be sadly missed by all of his family including his much loved grandchildren, Oisín, Rónán, Aisling, Cian and Caoimhe.
Interment took place in Blackwater Cemetery following funeral Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Rowe Street.
