‘Build new Wexford estates’

NEW estates similar to Corish Park and Liam Mellows Park are needed for families in Wexford town.

This is the view of Independent Cllr Davy Hynes who called on Minister Simon Coveney to urgently review the Rebuilding Ireland bill published last year.

The bill aims to double the annual level of residential construction to 25,000 homes and to deliver 47,000 social housing units by 2021.

‘As the situation in Wexford is day by day becoming more intolerable, we see people coming forward weekly and sometimes daily in housing clinics and to councillors, either homeless or on the verge of homelessness,’ Cllr Hynes said.

‘While we welcome the aspirations of the bill, it is still not addressing the absolute need for more social housing. As the majority of people in Wexford will still not be in a position to take out mortgages even if the houses were there, which they are not, we need to get back to the building of social houses on a large scale.’

He said estates like Corish Park and Liam Mellows Park need to be built in the town.

People Before Profit Cllr Deirdre Wadding seconded the motion.

Fine Gael Cllr Anthony Donohoe said Cllr Hynes is calling for more houses to be built when the government has committed to building 47,000 housing units.
