Hook peninsula talk and field trip
TO celebrate National Biodiversity Week, Wexford Library is hosting a talk by naturalist and long-time columnist with this newspaper, Jim Hurley, about the Hook peninsula, one of the great nature areas in County Wexford.
Titled ‘Hook Head’, the talk will paint a broad canvas covering all aspects of the several outstanding natural heritage resource values of the peninsula.
The many areas that will be highlighted include the bedrocks with their outstanding fossils, the wild plants, the amazing underwater marine life, wild birds, the spectacular whales and dolphins that have been seen in the area and the nature conservation designations of the Hook peninsula.
The illustrated talk takes place in Wexford town library on Tuesday, May 23, at 7 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome. The library recommends booking in advance by calling them on (053) 919 6760.
Following the talk, a field trip has been organised by Coastwatch Ireland. Aptly titled ‘ The living and the dead of Hook Head’. This biodiversity event with Karin Dubsky and Jim Hurley will look at both the plants and animals that live on the seashore today and the fossil evidence of the life forms that survived there some 340 million years ago.
The field trip is on Sunday, May 28. Meet at Hook Head lighthouse car park for a 2 p.m. start. Attendance is free and all are welcome. The lighthouse café will be open for lunch or coffee afterwards.
