U-16s lift the Slaney Cup

-

THREE WINS from three games saw Wexford lift the inaugural Slaney Under-16 Cup in All Blacks on Sunday afternoon, with manager Mick Bennett delighted with the performance of his young squad.

Goals from Sara Siggins, Shannon McGovern and Emma Clarke gave Wexford an opening win against Kilkenny, and they followed this up with a hard-earned 2-1 win over Carlow courtesy of a Kira Bates-Crosbie header and a Niamh McHugh strike.

The final group game saw Kira Bates-Crosbie score again as Wexford overcame Waterford 1-0 and wrap up the tournament.

Kira rounded off a great day by also being awarded player of the tournament. The league would like to take this opportunity to thank All Blacks for the use of the complex for the weekend, and all who came and supported both teams

Under-14s

Wexford Under-14 girls finished runners-up behind Kilkenny, losing out on goal difference in a very competitive inaugural Slaney Cup in All Blacks on Saturday.

This competition was set up by the Wexford League to assist their squad in preparation for the upcoming Gaynor Cup, and Wexford manager Philip McGrath will be content with the performance of his young squad.

Wexford won two of their games and drew with Kilkenny in the final game but ultimately lost out as Kilkenny had a superior goal difference and took home the cup.

In the opening game, Wexford overcame Waterford 3-0 thanks to goals from Ciara Rees, Jennah Molloy and Holly Jenkinson.

This was followed by a tight 1-0 win over the Wexford Development squad with Kira Bates-Crosbie scoring the only goal of the game, before a 1-1 draw with Kilkenny rounded off the day with Kilkenny running out winners on goal difference.

Kira Bates-Crosbie was also the Wexford scorer in this game.

This tournament was also a great run-out for Wexford development squad, who were called in at the last minute when South Tipperary had to withdraw, and they put in some excellent performances in their three games.
