Government ‘is full of sex maniacs’

May 1986

-

Top Fianna Fáilers took time off from political duties at the weekend to enjoy the annual dinner dance of the Wexford Comhairle Ceanntair.

But up to three hundred diners in the Talbot Hotel still had verbal dessert in the form of a 30-minute attack on the present Government by former Minister for Finance, Ray McSharry.

Taxation, unemployment, emigration and the current national debt were all subjects laboured on by the Sligo/Leitrim TD and MEP.

But he really brought the crowd to its feet when he moved on to matters of moral issues that have busied the Government of late, as he described the Fine Gael/Labour coalition as being ‘a Government full of sex maniacs’.

‘ They’ve gone through contraception and abortion, and now they’re talking about divorce,’ he said. ‘It seems all they’re bothered about is anything to do with sex – who has it, what can happen after it, and what happens when people don’t want it with each other any more. And all this at a time when the country flounders on in a deep depression.’

And on a more local subject, the declared that if the Government was prepared to ‘give penny for penny’ with the EEC, Rosslare Harbour – vital to the future of Co. Wexford – could be developed.

‘But this is a coalition which has made nonsense of the name of Government in the way they have handled the country in the last three and a half years, and they will learn that at the next general election,’ he said.

His hard-hitting speech was met with a standing ovation by the party faithful present.
