THE star attraction at Gorey Cricket Club’s underage training session last Monday night was the smart new equipment which was recently donated by friend of the club, and megastar Ed Sheeran.
Ed is a cricket fanatic, and a regular visitor to Gorey. His uncle Chris coaches the underage section of the club, and hearing about the revival of cricket in the area, Ed made a sizeable donation towards the development of junior cricket in the local club.
The windfall resulted in the purchase of top range bats, gloves, pads and cricket bags made by Gray-Nicolls, one of the top brands in world cricket.
Club chairman Al Fitzgerald said they were deeply appreciative to Ed for his donation. ‘ They are all thrilled with the new gear,’ he said. ‘Ed is a fanatical cricket supporter, and he was delighted to help Gorey Cricket Club.’
He said that the club, in conjunction with Cricket Leinster has coached over 800 primary school children across Wexford, and will hold the Trent Johnston Perpetual Cup for primary schools at Courtown Hibs on Thursday, June 22 next.
The club’s junior team has a match scheduled against Waterford in Courtown in the coming weeks.
Al said it’s a great unifying sport, as over 30 nationalities are involved in the club.
Gorey Cricket Club holds junior coaching on Mondays at Courtown Hibs FC grounds from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. To find out more about Gorey CC, visit the club’s Facebook page.
