GOREY CRICKET

-

The introduction of cricket in Gorey’s local schools has enthusiastically been received, with hand and eye co-ordination clearly evident from the experience of playing hurling.

It has come as no surprise that schools in Wexford have excelled in this global game, by displaying the skills of batting and fielding, so synonymous with Gaelic games, famously instigated by the cricket-loving Rackard and Henderson brothers.

Gorey Cricket Club are delighted to announce that in co-ordination with Cricket Leinster, the second annual ‘Trent Johnson Primary School competition’ will be held on June 20-22 in the grounds of Courtown Hibs A.F.C.

Over 800 children have been introduced to cricket in Wexford over the last twelve months, with interest so phenomenal that this Perpetual Cup, in honour of the man who captained Ireland to victory over Pakistan in the 2007 World Cup, may attract schools from Kilanerin to Kilmore who have been coached in cricket.

Herbie Honohan, chief co-ordinator, and Gorey mentor Mark Leonard, are the main driving forces, assisted in the main by Chris Sheeran, Vincent Murphy and Anslem Diaz, behind this school cricket renaissance.

The sport was once played, as history duly notes, in most local parishes up to World War Two.

Junior training commences for both primary and secondary school children on Mondays at 6.30 p.m. in Courtown Hibs pitch, with no experience required, just enthusiasm and a desire to succeed.

In keeping with best practice, O.C.I. regulations and standard procedures, Naomi Walsh and Haley Squire are the club’s Liaison and Child Officers, accompanied by qualified coaches.

Senior training for both males and females also takes place on Mondays and Thursdays, with new members always welcome. Gorey C.C. acknowledges and appreciates the donation of top-range gear, including much sought-after Gray-Nicholls bats, from an avid cricket fan: Ed Sheeran. His uncle, Chris, amongst others, will monitor and encourage players in achieving their potential.

Gorey C.C. played their first competitive Leinster League match recently, bridging a gap of nearly 50 years since cricket was last played competitively in the Gorey area, against a seasoned Castleknock team.

The match was played in Druid’s Glen, home of Greystones Cricket Club. After taking seven wickets, after 28 overs, with impressive bowling from team captain Anslem Diaz, Steve Wood, Khan Ambroze, Philip Leonard and star bowler Idrees Younas, the omens looked good. Unfortunately, the rain followed us from Gorey and the game was called off before we could bat. Dark clouds may have prevailed but Gorey undoubtedly illuminated proceedings before the umpires wisely called off the game.

No doubt frustrated, Gorey have left their calling card in this division.

Team: Anslem Diaz (capt.), Khan Ambroze, Philip Leonard, Cliff Stewart, Waheed Barbar, Roger Spengler, Surejh Punchihewa, Attila Stahlut, Steve Wood and Reiner Graz. Reserves: Rashid Owias and Ahsan Javed.

This match may be replayed, subject to regulations, and our next competitive game is in the Dick O’Neill Cup away to Carlow on May 20.

Gorey would like to offer our gratitude to Greystones, particularly Paul Daniels, their Chairman, for the use of the grounds and the hospitality shown to both teams. Also, to the two umpires who officiated at the game, we extend our appreciation.

Belated ‘new year’ greetings to our Sri Lankan members and community on a ‘new beginning’ in a day of fun and culture recently celebrated.
