Bunscoil Loreto students win top debating final

-

A team of students from Bunscoil Loreto scooped the Mary Ward Loreto Debating Championship cup last week.

The students beat off strong competition from St Patrick’s Loreto in Bray to win the cup in what was a very close debate.

The Bunscoil Loreto girls succeeded in defending the motion that ‘Parents are to blame for their children’s behaviour’. It was a very controversial topic which saw fantastic arguments being brought forward from both sides.

The winning team from Bunscoil Loreto included sixth class students Lucy Byrne, Katie Lane and Ashley Bolton. The chairperson of the debate was sixth class student Emma Lazniova. The team was prepared and tutored by teachers Claire Thompson and Niamh Fenlon.

This is the fourth year of the competition and previous winners have included Loreto, Dalkey and Loreto St. Stephen’s Green. This is the first time that Bunscoil Loreto have won the title and thus there was great excitement.

This has been a fantastic year for Bunscoil Loreto’s debating team and they have brought great success to the school. They participated in two competitions, both the National Primary Debating Competition and the Mary Ward Loreto Debating Championship. They reached the second round of the Primary Debating Competition before going on to win the Mary Ward Loreto Debating Championship.
