Man jailed for stealing from Tesco in Gorey
A MAN who stole almost €400 of goods from Tesco in Gorey was jailed for nine months at last Wednesday’s sitting of Enniscorthy District Court.
Aivaras Urniezius (29), 43A Huntstown Lane, Blanchardstown was charged with having a flat head screwdriver and small pliers in his possession with the intention of using them for them and with stealing DVD and electronic gaming equipment valued at €397.87 from Tesco Ramstown on May 1, 2017.
He pleaded guilty to the charges and the court heard he had stolen ten DVDs and two XBox headphone sets and a controller valued at €397.87. When apprehended by security staff he had a screwdriver and a pliers with him.
The court heard that the property was recover.
Urniezius, the court heard, had previous convictions.
Acting for Urniezius solicitor Lana Doherty said that her client was a Lithuanian national who was in Ireland for the past five years. She said he had been working part time but lost his job and had no social welfare.
Ms Doherty said he was staying with friends in Dublin.
Judge Gerard Haughton said that Urniezius had a ‘considerable history of theft’ noting he was subject two separate suspended sentences when he committed the theft in Tesco.
He said the ‘fact the goods were recovered was fortuitous’ saying Urniezius was entitled to some leniency for his plea of guilty.
He sentenced him to nine months imprisonment in respect of the theft and marked the other matter proven and taken into account.
